I didn't miss him and this episode certainly didn't need him. This is one of my favorites. Great episode! Great writing too.

yea, I agree that it didn't need him or Hot Lips. It's also one of my favorites from those first 3 years which were the best ones! (they made a HUUUGE mistake by letting A.A. take over the typewriter and directors chair)

I think the majority of MASH fans would agree with all this. They had a few good episodes after the 3rd season, but it was nothing like those early episodes. Started to change after Henry died. After BJ arrived...

agree, though there were humorous moments/eps. in the later ones, just fewer and a different type of humor.

The last 2 seasons, with the exception of the finale and a few eps., were very average with some episodes almost pathetic.

"Snap Judgement," which they made into a TWO-PART STORYLINE !!!! was among the worst.
It wasn't bad because of Jamie Farr's acting, but due to the insufferably weak & trite script.

Hot Lips was noticeably absent too.

Interesting they couldn't state both were away or something, like frequently happened with Radar when he was noticeably absent from many episodes in the latter years.

I always wonder whenever I see that one if they ever got to eat the ribs and if so how'd they heat them up? And if not, what'd they do with them?

Either that, or Linville and Swit were only contracted to do a certain number of episodes per season and they wanted to use them for other episodes.

I think the episode is just fine without them.

I always loved the fact that they were able to build an entire episode around Hawkeye's obsession with spare ribs from a Chicago eatery.

However, if I was Hawkeye, I would have grabbed at least a rib to chow down on as they went to go treat the wounded.

I agree spunkygirl, I don't know why people have to complain about Alan Alda writing and directing for MASH. I think all through its run (mostly) it was very funny and touching. Yes there are episodes of MASH I don't like. But I'm sure everybody can say that about any TV sitcom they like. One of the most consistently smart and funny sitcoms ever.

well you have to admit that; especially in the last couple seasons it got too much of "we're doctors and we're nurses and we're so good cause we save lives...and death is such a bummer and war is hell..." and this, that and the other.
