I've often wondered why they didn't utilize her more. She was a great actress and a fun character. I think they were trying too hard to make it all about Rerun instead of focusing more on Raj and his family.

They should have kept Mable in the show more. I think Shirley kind of took over for Mable after she left.

Shirley moved into the Thomas house and became Dee's guardian after Mabel left the show.

Mabel King left the show because she felt her specific character was not being developed or focused on. Also, she was not getting paid enough such that she felt she could leave theater.

I don't think folks on here understand how underpaid this show was compared to other shows at the time.

You have to remember that Mabel King was a seasoned, well trained actress. The rest of the set consisted of teenagers and/or young adults who had no training in acting. The only main cast actor with significant experience was Earnest Thomas. I can understand the resentment that a seriously trained actor would have if she is sitting in her trailer useless, episode after episode while the producers are telling the writers to write to the clownish humor of the non-actors. I would be frustrated too. And I repeat, its not like she was getting paid a lot. You all have this warped idea that these characters had been paid a lot.

Mothers on TV shows sometimes don't get much to do. The mother on One day at a time wasn't getting much air time and that's why the show ended .The mother on The Waltons left because she wasn't getting much air time. The mother on Happy Days wasn't getting much air time until she spoke up.

Really!

Ann Romano was featured all the time. And many, many storylines revolved around her character. The show wasn't just all about the kids.

Maybe liane49 was talking about towards the end of ODAAT about Ann, which is why the show ended. But in the early years Ann was a focal point of the show.

Yea Bonnie cut back on her airtime toward the end but it was her decision. She was getting tired of the role and the cast was quite large by then.

If you have good enough scripts, the characters will become universal and viewers attach to all the characters interacting together. Take Modern Family, for example. So to simply say, folks only wanted to watch Raj and his friends' antics is very simpleton and short sided. It's a situation comedy, not a stand up comedy show or an SNL skit. That's why it is "ensemble cast" in a "situation comedy.

If you're appealing to the lowest common denominator, sure, you can say that it was a simply a show about teenagers aimlessly goofing off at a diner. But I saw a more multifaceted show than that, including from a comedy standpoint. I saw a show which, at its best, could feature family dynamics intertwined with peer/teenager antics. The best episodes showed Raj and the teenagers getting into trouble AND Mabel King coming in to fix it and add a moral compass to the situation.

Puppy Love was one of the highest rated episodes, and it featured Mabel King, and was probably the single best comedic performance of the entire series.

So I respect her decision to realize that the "powers that be" had another vision for the show that didn't comport with her original understanding of the show, nor her talent. I respect her decision to leave, because I think that is what killed the show, and while the actors on the ground eventually lost their paydays, the horrible writers and producers did not get paid the millions and millions that thought they could get at her expense. They had to go back to the drawing board and work harder on their next projects. Mabel King left with her head held high and with great integrity.

Good for her!
