TV "Vikings" Follow-up Series Lands at Netflix

History Renews "Vikings" for Season 4
by Matt Webb Mitovich
March 26, 2015

In part because, like, no one would ever have the stones to tell Ragnar and Lagertha to shove off, History has renewed "Vikings" for a fourth season, it was announced on Thursday.

Vikings has raided the hearts of both audiences and critics, establishing itself as one of the most compelling, visually stunning dramas on television,” History GM Dirk Hoogstra said in a statement.

We are so proud of our immensely talented cast and crew led by Michael Hirst, whose intriguing storylines and pivotal arcs have the perfect balance of scope, smarts and bloodshed to keep our loyal fans watching and wanting more.

Season-to-date, "Vikings" is averaging 4.3 million total viewers (with 2 mil landing in the 18-49 sweet spot), in Live+3 ratings — ranking as the No. 1 cable series on Thursday nights.

"Vikings" Renewed for 5th Season, Jonathan Rhys Meyers Joins Cast
by Matt Webb Mitovich
3/17/16

Not five episodes into its 4th Season run, History has renewed "Vikings" for a 5th Season.

The new cycle will span 20-episodes and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) will be joining the cast.

The brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television,” History president Jana Bennett said in a statement.

Vikings has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Myers will become a bigger part of the History family after his incredible performance in our upcoming production of Roots.

"Vikings" Renewed for Sixth Season at History
by Denise Petski
September 12, 2017

"History" has ordered a 20-episode sixth season of its hit drama series Vikings. The renewal comes ahead of the series’ Season 5 premiere in November.

In addition, series regular Katheryn Winnick is set to helm one episode in Season 6, marking her directorial debut. Production is slated to begin this fall in Ireland.

"Vikings" has been a solid ratings performer, with the last season averaging 7.8 million viewers per episode across all platforms. The series is a top five drama across ad-supported cable and averaged 4.1 million total viewers last season in Live+7.

Additionally, the series reached 34.3 million total viewers in linear Live+7.

The 20-episode fifth season will air in two parts beginning with a two-hour premiere Wednesday, November 29 at 9 PM ET/PT followed by eight episodes airing every Wednesday in the 9 PM slot.

The remaining 10 episodes of Season 5 are slated to air in 2018.

"Vikings" To End after Season 6, Follow-up Series in the Works at History from Michael Hirst & MGM Television
by Nellie Andreeva
January 4, 2019

History’s flagship scripted series "Vikings" will be ending its run after the upcoming 20-episode sixth season.

As the hit drama is wrapping, History, "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst, and studio MGM Television, are looking to extend the franchise with a new series.

I’ve learned that the network is in talks with MGM and Hirst about a new series from the same creative team as the original series, which would continue the "Vikings" saga.

If the offshoot project, which is in early stages, moves forward, Hirst will be joined by feature writer Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive).

"Vikings", which will end its run after a total of 89 episodes, is currently halfway through airing the back 10 episodes of its 20-episode fifth season, with the finale slated for Jan. 30.

The series recently wrapped production on the final sixth season, which is expected to debut later this year, with the last episodes likely airing in 2020.

"Vikings" Sequel Series Lands at Netflix
by Matt Webb Mitovich
November 19, 2019

The offshoot of History’s "Vikings" is officially happening — and it’s happening on Netflix.

The streaming giant announced on Tuesday that it has greenlit "Vikings: Valhalla", an original MGM Television series from "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst that will continue the storytelling of his epic saga.

Picking up 100 years after the events of the original series (which will launch the first half of its sixth and final season on Wednesday, Dec. 4), "Vikings: Valhalla" will dramatize the adventures of the most famous Vikings who ever lived – Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and the Norman King William the Conqueror (who was a Viking descendant).

These men and women will blaze new paths as they fight for survival in an ever-changing and evolving Europe,” reads the synopsis.

"Vikings: Valhalla" to End With Season 3
by Vlada Gelman
Oct. 6, 2023

"Vikings: Valhalla", an offshoot of History’s "Vikings" series, will conclude with its upcoming third season, which is slated to debut in 2024 on the streamer, IGN reports.

I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald and Freydis,” creator Jeb Stuart said in a statement to IGN. “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today and we have done just that.

I hope when the audience gets to see the new season, they’ll be excited by all the new heights that we’ve taken these heroes,” Stuart continued. “When we started this project five years ago, I worked hard with this incredible cast and crew to craft a journey that we all hoped would be satisfying.

Of course with real historical figures, there are always more aspects of their lives that could be explored, but it made sense story-wise for our Leif, Freydis and Harald’s voyages to end with our third season,” Stuart explained.

He added, “And we really cannot wait for the fans to see the conclusion of this chapter of history.
