"Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" Renewed for Two More Seasons at HBO

And now, this: HBO has renewed "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" for Seasons 3 and 4. Each season will consist of 35 episodes, the network announced Tuesday.

Season 3 will run in 2016, followed by Season 4 in 2017.

Earlier this month, before "Last Week Tonight‘s" Season 2 premiere in January, Oliver told reporters that he enjoys an unprecedented level of latitude at the premium cabler.

“We can make the show fit the story we want to tell,” he said, adding with a laugh, “It’s kind of a paralyzing level of freedom.”

The satirical news-anaylsis series recently took home a Writers Guild Award for Best Comedy/Variety (Including Talk) series.

HBO has handed out another big renewal. "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" has earned a three-season pickup at the pay cabler, which will keep it on the air through 2020, it was announced Tuesday.

“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world,” said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “His extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary is second to none.”

Added Oliver: “First: I firmly disagree with everything Casey just said. Second: We’re very grateful to Richard Plepler, Casey and everyone at HBO for letting us continue to do whatever it is we actually do. And finally: We’d also like to thank our staff for all their hard work. We’re incredibly proud of all of you, and rather than tell you that to your face, we’d like to do it in the cold, dispassionate form of a press release.”

John Oliver is sticking with HBO for another three years after the premium cable network renewed "Last Week Tonight" through 2023.

The series, which is currently on hiatus until September 27, airs on HBO on Sunday nights at 11pm. Oliver has not yet returned to the studio since the COVID-19 production shutdown.

“For the past seven years, John and his incredibly talented team have taken on topics that are both in the public mind and off the beaten path, always managing to shed new light on these subjects with intelligence and searing humor,” said HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys.

“We are beyond thrilled to continue this relationship for three more years.”

“We’re all extremely happy to be able to continue to do our show on HBO for another three years, or until the end of the world, whichever comes first,” added Oliver.

Fresh from helping the pūteketeke become the Bird of the Century, John Oliver has another reason to celebrate.

HBO has renewed "Last Week Tonight" for a further three seasons, taking the weekly show through 2026.

“We’re very happy to get to keep making this show with our fantastic staff,” said Oliver. “We will continue trying to stretch the term ‘entertainment’ to the breaking point.”

The new deal, which runs through Season 13, comes as the tenth season of the late-night show is coming to a close later this month.

The show had a truncated season as a result of the writers strike – airing just over two-thirds of its normal episode count as a result of the labor action – but Oliver still managed to explore timeshares, psychedelic therapy, homeowner associations, abortion rights, the Israel-Hamas war, dollar stores and the Tennessee Adult Entertainment Act as well as most recently organ donation.
