Default Are you a fan of recasting a character?

I personally hate when producers recast a character. I would they rather just recreate a whole new character.

I believe shows like Roseanne, Fresh Prince, and Family Matters made huge mistakes when they recasted a character.

I prefer what Cheers did with creating a new character in place the character that left the show.

sorry guys ignore the poll. I worded it wrong so the poll makes no sense.

So did Dynasty, when Emma Samms replaced Pamela Sue Martin as Fallon Colby.

It depends on the show and the character, some actors are so identified with a particular role that recasting them seems almost criminal. However, there are circumstances when it's the only choice including contract disputes and unfortunately death or illness.

2 of my least favorite recast roles were Donna Reed as Miss Ellie on Dallas and Michael Learned who briefly took over as Kay Chancellor on Y&R. Both are fine actresses in their own right but they weren't right for the parts made famous by Barbara Bel Geddes and Jeanne Cooper.

Yes I felt sorry for Donna Reed, who was handed an impossible task. My memory recalls an ATV production of The Cedar Tree, which I recommend for those nostalgic for the British past akin to Upstairs Downstairs and would watch religiously as a child, and which eventually descended into farce after the Munich fire, when they recast one of the main characters. I can't quite remember the sequence if anyone remembers?http://radiosoundsfamiliar.com/the-cedar-tree.php

I also say it depends on the show some worked and some didn't.

Generally no. But there are exceptions. On WKRP the actress who played Carlson's mother in the pilot was pretty weak. Carol Bruce replaced her and played the part well several times.

I didn't mind Emma Samms replacing Fallon on Dynasty, I thought she was good. I also liked Jack Coleman, who replaced Al Corley as Steven Carrington.

Probably one of the worst recasts was on the soap One Life to Live with Blair Kramer. The original actress, Mia Korf, was Eurasian. Then she was fired and replaced with Kassie Wesley, a blonde with a Southern accent. Apparently the reason given for change was that the producers felt Mia wouldn't look right in a romance they wanted to write for the character.

I don't remember that, for some reason.

the actresses name was Sylvia Sidney. I agree I also liked Carol Bruce better in the role.

Depends. The worst I've seen was in the Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries. Not only did they recast Ned Nickerson in Season 2, but they acted like he didn't exist in the previous season, gave him a whole new background.

Also Nancy Drew herself being recast in Season 2, the second Nancy only seemed to be there to be rescued by The Hardy Boys.

Al Corley played the part with a much quieter personality. Jack was a bit more outgoing. I found the actors changed the characters personality. I did prefer Pamela to Emma only because Pam was on longer than Al.

It didn't help that the scripts started to go off around that point,if they hadn't gone off already that is,and it wasn't very complimentary that the second actor to take the part of Steven had to pretend he had undergone extensive face reformation surgery to get into character for the role.

I suppose since he had head injuries that could be used to explain the personality change, perhaps along with his experiences while away.

I have watched a lot of soaps in my life and characters are always being recasted and for the most part I was ok with it...sometimes its a perfect fit sometimes not...

No not at all, especially if it is a Main character like Charlie played by Charlie Sheen in Two and a Half Men. I love Ashton Kutcher very much and think he is a talented actor but there was already Chemistry with Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer that didn't work as well with Ashton.
