OK a question. This is something that's been bugging me, often in Cheers Frasier is seen as a medical doctor eg. treating Cliff for shock. Hes always eager to do so (obviously!) and the gang let him. I dont know much bout psychology degrees, training etc. but surely theres a huge difference between a medical doctor and a psychiatrist (tho both seen as 'doctors')
Please correct me if im wrong...im a little confused!!! Luv jay |

Pschology is sort of the study of the mind. Frasier might have examined cliff because it may have to do with his field but it may not. I'm pretty sure all psychiatrists know how to check some basic stuff just like medical doctors.

Well, PSYCHOLOGISTS aren't doctors, but PSYCHIATRISTS are. To receive a degree in psychiatry, you have to go through medical school, therefore Frasier IS really a medical doctor. He can prescribe medicine, so... if they need a doctor and he's around, why the hell not ask him for help, right?! LOL

Frasier: Would we sleep together? Lilith: I thought we'd freeze your sperm. Frasier: Is that a yes or a no? Lilith: Natural fertilization isn't practical. I'd have to fly to Seattle every time I ovulate. Frasier: Right, okay. So then, your plan is for me to visit some local doctor, freeze my essence, and then bring it home with you. Lilith: Correct. I'll take mine to go! |

Another Difference is that Psychiatrists can prescribe medication and I believe Psychologists cannot.

Right. That's what I was alluding to in my previous post. Psychology is more focused on counseling and such. Psychiatry is for the more severe mental illnesses that require medication -- which is why psychiatrists have to receive medical degrees and psychologists don't. Basically, psychiatrists are psychologists who are also medical doctors. LOL It's not all that complicated.
I find psychology so fascinating. I wish I could minor in it.

I'm an undergraduate psychology student and it is a very interesting subject, IMHO. People can get doctorates in psychology, but that doesn't automatically turn us into medical doctors. I think the big difference between the two (besides the ability to prescribe meds) is that psychologists usually study human behavior or provide counseling while psychiatrists treat people with mental illnesses.

Yeah. Psychologists counsel those who are having random problems in their life. They just counsel. Most psychiatrists don't actually counsel anymore. If you have a mental illness, you usually go to both a psychologist (for counseling) and psychiatrist (for medicine). My cousin is bipolar (along with other mental illnesses, which I won't get into) and he sees both. Then again, my friends mom has a psychiatry degree as well as psychology, and I believe she counsels, too? I guess it all depends.
Obviously, Frasier and Lilith counseled... how I enjoy listening to them complain about their manic depressive patients and such. LOL I can't wait for all the Lilith eps to start airing. YAY! |

I've thought about being a psychologist but it might get depressing listening to problems all day...

Psychologists can do three things. They can counsel people, they can do research (both human and animal behavior) and they can teach at universities. You can do just one of those things, or you can do all three. I'm a psychology major, about to start working on my doctorate in the fall, and I'm going into counseling. The main difference is that psychiatrists can prescribe medicine, while psychologists can't. However, with the way HMOs are working these days, most of the counseling is falling to psychologists, since they're cheaper, having not gone to med school.

See, we should have just had Dulcey answer that question from the beginning. LOL The clearest and most sane answer! Me... let's not even go there. I knew what I was trying to say, obviously didn't convey it very well. The story of my life... *sighs*
