Default Karen Carpenter: the voice of the 20th century

I reminisce on that melodic contralto voice of hers, that tragic figure the victim of family circumstance and the unrelenting pursuit of profit as Carter turned to Reagan, leading to her early demise 32 years ago this month at the age of 32. How this fat kid on the block must have recalled those cruel taunts as she sought solace in her grand Californian mansion, losing just a little more weight to be on the safe side as her body dysphoria took hold. She came back from that dehydrated skeleton which occupied a seat on the Sue Lawley show, a brief glimmer of hope and a temporary convalescence before the (one feels) inevitable relapse.http://youtu.be/ZWbi492f-wQ

Suggest this be moved to the music forum, probably not hurting anything here but it's obviously a music topic.

It is hard to believe it has been 32 years!!
Her voice is one you just don't get tired of hearing.

As far as a favorite,,, how can you choose~~~~ALL OF THEM!!!

If you really listen to the words of some of their songs, they had to do with Karen's Life. The melody that Richard came up with, for the songs, were incredible with her singing.

Truly miss her!

Gone, but forever in our HEARTS, and will never be forgotten!!

No never Foggy, and the fairground in the following clip seemed to be an encapsulation of the Carpenters' career with its spinning carousel and rise and fall trajectory of the elephants, yet concealing within a deep malaise as Richard takes an anxious sideways glance at his sister in unguarded moments in what outwardly seemed to us gentler times,if not to them.http://youtu.be/AHfddvbKb4w

She had the voice of an angel. I love all of the Carpenter's song, just love some more than others. My Dad's favorite singer; gone too soon for sure.
Some favorites..

Close to You (every wedding song of the 70s and 80s)

We've Only Just Begun (every prom song)

Rainy Days and Mondays

Superstar

Karen had a beautiful voice! It was such a shame what happened. Poor girl, as talented and pretty as she was , but she had self image issues so bad to diet to such extreme! Such a tragedy that her life ended because of it!

I love We've only just begun and Close to you . And Merry Christmas darling.

I hope the writer for Billboard Magazine who called her a "chubby sister" was fired and blacklisted from the industry for that.

Actually, I take it back. That was an inaccuracy from the 1989 TV movie about Karen Carpenter. From Wikipedia:

"Karen is shown reacting to a Billboard article that describes her as "chubby". No such article was ever written about Karen. However, there was an article that claimed Richard to be "chubby"."

I do wonder what was it that cause Karen to go to extreme dieting.

A transition from the boy and girl next door to international superstars in such a brief timespan it took all unawares, imprisoned by their own success as they travelled the globe, guided possibly by malign influences as they exhausted themselves and came to rely on prescription medication, unable to move forwards or back, maybe longing for the simpler times in this song where Karen at least looks normal maybe for the last time, the melody tinged with a hint of optimism among the all too prevalent angst which Richard experiences towards his vulnerable younger sister as she starts her disintegration before his very eyes.http://youtu.be/evETS8_WFGE

What a gorgeous voice! She projected such deep emotion in her recordings. My favorites are Only Yesterday, Yesterday Once More and Superstar.

Was Superstar the one that goes " Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby, said you'd be coming back this way again baby! Baby, baby, baby Oh baby. I love you , I really do"!! ?

I think it is . I love that song too!

Yup that's Superstar. Listen to the emotion in her voice. It's almost heartbreaking. I think I read somewhere that Richard was at first against Karen recording this song because it's about a rock groupie. But she insisted. It's a classic!
