I believe this guy would have worked a lot better as the Landlord after the Ropers

He wasn't goofy and very stern and funny and would have been a lot better to me than Mr. Furley. I guess I feel this way because the kids saw Furley as a JOKE but would have had more respect for someone like Travers

BTW: Of course this would mean that he would have never been the dean at jack's school

Who says he couldn't be the Dean and the owner of an apartment building?

But I kind of see where you're coming from. Dean Travers was a real authority figure. Furley had no authority over anyone.

People may have loved Don Knotts and his "wannabe tough but in reality wimpy" characters, but the fact is, I agree, Mr. Angelino, Dean Travers, and Mr. Roper are far more interesting characters to me. If Dean Travers was threatening the kids to pay the rent it definitely would have carried more weight.

On the negative side though, Dean Travers already had such an unlikeable personality that if he made the gay jokes at Jack that Roper or Furley did he would have come across as a real bad guy. I guess that is why he wasn't the landlord. The producers knew people wouldn't root for a landlord that wasn't likeable.

Though probably since he seemed to like Jack living with two girls Jack wouldn't have had to continue on the homosexual cover. So in that sense the gay jokes would have never come up in the first place. Travers may be a jerk, but he would have been more accepting of Jack living with two women than Furley or Roper would have been, that's for sure.

And think of all the times the trio helped out Furley. Travers would have been too unlikeable for the trio to want to help, therefore less storylines would be available for the writers to come up with.

I can't help it, I just really think Don Knotts was such a Johnny one-note that he's lucky to have had the career he had.

He only did one thing, and you either love it or you can live without it, and you can put me in the latter camp.

Travers was OK as an occasional character. I would not have wanted to see more of him.
I think a lot of what Mr. Knotts did on Three's Company was too broad and exaggerated, but I have come to accept it. His work as Barney Fife was fantastic, so his role as Furley is bound to pale in comparison.
Also, the Ropers were near perfect for that show and it was a huge blow to have them leave.

Dean Travers was a big time pervert. It wouldn't have worked because he would always be hitting on Janet, Chrissy and eventually Cindy and Teri. Jack would never have put up with that. He would have knocked Travers out.

I agree with you....it was funny the one or two times it was played for jokes, but if we saw that every week his lechery would just be plain creepy.
