Default TV Land gives Mary Tyler Moore a statue and marathon on May 8

TV Land to Erect Statue of Mary Tyler Moore in Minneapolis (5/8/02)

TV Land and the city of Minneapolis will honor seven-time Emmy Award winner Mary Tyler Moore on Wednesday, May 8th with a statue depicting the actresses' legendary tam toss from the opening credits to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, it was announced today.

The eight-foot bronze statue will grace the Nicollet Mall, the very site from which she sent her tam skyward, and will be initially unveiled by Moore, who will be joined on stage by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Larry W. Jones, General Manager and Executive Vice President, TV Land.

The statue represents TV Land's second effort under the network's TV Land Landmarks initiative, which seeks to honor television legends and the cities and towns with which they are closely identified.

Moore was selected by the network for her portrayal of the modern career woman, Mary Richards, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show - the most Emmy winning show in television history.

Moore herself won two Emmys for The Dick Van Dyke Show, four for The Mary Tyler Moore Show and an unprecedented seventh Emmy for the 1993 telepic, Stolen Babies.

Currently, Moore continues to perform as well as serve as International Chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and is active in numerous health and animal protection organizations.

TV Land, which airs both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show, will pay tribute to Moore on-air on Thursday, May 9 (8:00-11:00pm ET/PT) with four classic episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show as well as a re-telecast of the 2001 TV Land original special, Inside TV Land: The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show can be seen every day on TV Land at 10:00am ET/PT and 4:00am ET/PT.

"TV Land is honored to salute Mary Tyler Moore with a landmark celebrating her professional and personal achievements," said Larry W. Jones. "The indelible impression of Mary releasing the tam is one of the most celebrated symbols of freedom in modern society. By placing a statue in the original location where this image was captured, TV Land hopes this statue will remind passers-by of the freedom and optimism that Mary has come to represent."

Gwendolyn Gillen of Hustisford, Wisconsin created the statue. Gillen's previous works include: the Wisconsin Veterans of the Korean War Memorial; a bronze bust commissioned by celebrated performer Sir Anthony Hopkins; a clay portrait of Sir Laurence Olivier, as King Lear, and a bronze likeness of Baryshinkov as he appeared as Jason in Medea.

Gillen's entry was selected from over 19 submissions following the call for artists from the Minneapolis Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA). The decision was made by an Artist Selection Panel, comprised of various artists, officials from the city of Minneapolis and representatives from TV Land following a review of all qualified submissions. Mary Tyler Moore approved the artist selection as well.

Pavanbadal, thank you SOO much for posting that! I'm about to get TV Land, so that makes my day! I just have one question, where did you find that article? It's not that I don't trust you, just that I'd love to post a link to it on my site.
Thanks,
Kristen
