Default Fran Ryan

So she made two guest appearances in the final season of Three's Company. Both times she played unlikable women that were the butt of jokes.

That's got to be a rare occasion for an actress on a sitcom.

But this is what I'll remember her for the most: Biscuits.

Oh my gosh, I had forgotten about that commercial! Fran Ryan was a fantastic and prolific character actress known by fans of many different TV shows, from the '60s to the '90s. When I think of her, I also think of the awful tragedies she endured with the loss of both her first and second husbands -- ironically both killed the same way -- and the very long disappearance of her second husband before his body was found:

Such a sad situation for a seemingly nice lady.

What about Anne Ramsey (the lady who is known for being on the Goonies)? She always played unlikeable characters. She was only on Three's Company once, in the money machine episode.

One could argue that Teresa Ganzel (Greedy Gretchen) also played a woman who was the butt of the joke more than once. She wasn't mean or anything, but she played a vacant blonde bimbo, which I found rather unlikeable.

I don't know all of Anne Ramsey's work. I wouldn't really say she was unlikeable on Three's, especially since she didn't have a speaking line.

Fran Ryan's characters on Three's were unusual. That's all I'm going to say. Likeable is subjective, but having a mean personality and the kind you want to insult back is a rare thing for female characters on sitcoms, and I'd say that happened in both of Fran's appearances. Very strange to me.

I dunno, there were plenty of unlikeable females on Three's Company. Take a look at Jack's girlfriend roster. There was the rich girl who made fun of Bernice in "Strangers in the Night." There was the girl who told Leo to get lost in "Old Folks at Home." There was the girl who wanted to change Jack in "Jack's 10." And of course Loni Anderson in "Coffee, Tea, or Jack." Or Dean Travers' niece who tried to get Jack in trouble in "Teacher's Pet."

There were a lot of mean girls on Three's Company. And usually they took their lumps for it (aka, Jack telling them to get out or made to look the fool, etc).

I don't think Dean Travers' niece got into too much trouble. And she laid a good insult on Larry at the end there, so I wouldn't exactly say she got made to look too foolish there. I will grant you the mean girls on "Old Folks at Home" and "Strangers In the Night" got their comeuppance.
