TV USA Cancels "Covert Affairs"

USA Cancels "Covert Affairs" after Five Seasons
Jan 6, 2015
by Kaitlin Thomas

The affair is over. USA has canceled spy drama "Covert Affairs" after five seasons, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

Unfortunately, this means fans will never know if Annie (Piper Perabo) chose Ryan's (Nic Bishop) marriage proposal or Joan's (Kari Matchett) invitation to join her CIA task force.

And executive producer Matt Corman wouldn't confirm what Annie's "got it" comment meant when he and fellow executive producer Chris Ord spoke to TVGuide.com after the fifth season finale, which is now the series finale.

"That remains to be seen! It could be anything really," he said.

"We always want to leave the audience satisfied but with questions," Corman explained.

"Even when we've done things that have been classified as cliff-hangers, we want the journey to have been a fun one and a worthy one, and one that the audience wants to come back for. We probably have left more questions than we ever have before with this one."

In hindsight, maybe that wasn't the best decision, but in his defense, "Covert Affairs'" cancellation is a bit of a shocker. USA recently decided to abandon its move into half-hour comedy, so ending one of its longest-running shows is a bit unexpected.

Per Deadline, the rising cost of the show — including talent fees and more expensive locations shoots — coupled with the show's declining ratings, played a role in its demise.

Season 5 averaged just 445,000 viewers in the coveted adults 18-49 demo. That's even less than the already canceled Rush (509,000). When time-shifted viewing was taken into account, the show averaged 3.3 million total viewers, but those numbers ultimately weren't enough to save it.

I watch this show for several seasons and Annie was always the rookie trainee to be a field agent even after having done many assignments successfully too! I gave up on this show because she never got promoted or have any authority! Anne was a great CIA agent but her supervisors feel like she just need more training. Totally stupid for the show runner to keep her as a trainee and not even promote her to an entry level field agent for all theses 5 seasons! I think should should be promoted four levels up to be a CIA Officer grade instead still be in the Trainee level which is not even a full agent level. Junior, agent, senior and then Officer!

What is the last episode about? Did she every make it out of training and become a field operative - full agent? Also, did she get married to the blind guy? who was her operations assistant? Not sure now if he was her immediate superior or just doing operating intellegences for her operations!
