Default Jeannie and Marriage

A season 2 episode that aired yesterday had Jeannie wanting to marry Tony and Haji telling her she wouldn't keep her powers. But they do get married in season 5, and there are several episodes that season with Jeannie still having her powers. Something the writers forgot about?

Ahhh......the short memories of TV writers! They seemed to have looked over that when the season five wedding happened!

Writers were looking to keep their jobs from week to week. Different writers write different shows. They didn't study all the episodes the way we do. Basically, they don't care. It may hurt our sensibilities that we care more than they do, but that's the way it is.

If you look back at all 5 seasons, you'll see a lot more inconsistencies than just this one!

Cool

Maybe this was just Haji's way of trying to scare Jeannie away from marriage to Tony!

that episode was the premiere of the 2nd season and was their first color one. Haji was played by Barbara Edens husband Michael Sarrazan.

Barbara Eden's husband was Michael Ansara, not Sarrazin. He played the Blue Djinn, who was a more frightening adversary for Jeannie than her own sister was later.

People in this day and age take it for granted that all shows have "bibles" that keep continuity flowing without any major issues. Reasons for having such a comprehensive guidebook are to keep a show's quality high, especially when you have legions of fans recording everything they can get their hands on, and then analyzing it all to death

That wasn't the case back then. Networks didn't expect any show to last more then five years in syndication, and would be shelved after that, never to be seen on the air again. No one had even VCRs back then, unless they were a post-production or television studio. Basically, the networks banked on the fallibility of their audiences memories. Continuity problems in the overall story simply didn't matter.

Haji was played by Abraham Sofaer during the series, not by Barbara Eden's then-husband.

Perhaps she would lose her powers slowly over time (after marriage). Maybe a few years after we last saw Tony and Jeannie, her powers were fully gone.

Of course, her sister stated that she had been married 47 times and never lost her powers...

In both the 1985 and the 1991 reunion movies, Jeannie still had her powers, and she'd had a (mostly human) son.

True, but I don't consider those movies as "official" continuations of the TV show. Mainly because they are just awful and recasting Larry Hagman was a grave error. I know the movies are there, but I ignore them. But that's just me.

I'm sure the rules for Jeannies could have changed by the time she got married.

And having I Dream of Jeannie without Larry Hagman is basically a waste of time. He was the most important factor in that show's success.
