Milton "Mel" Stewart, 72, an actor who had roles in television shows including "All in the Family" and "Scarecrow and Mrs. King," died Feb. 24 at a nursing home in Pacifica, Calif. He had Alzheimer's disease. From 1971 until 1973, he was a semi-regular on the groundbreaking "All in the Family" series, in which he played Henry Jefferson, the outspoken black neighbor of Archie Bunker. Mr. Stewart, often cast as an authority figure because of his stern countenance, appeared in movies including "Steelyard Blues" in 1973 and "Newman's Law" in 1974.
He retired from acting after making "Made in America" with Whoopi Goldberg in 1993, telling his wife, Annie Dong-Stewart, that there were "too many black, bald actors in Hollywood." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2002Mar18.html |
