January 1 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most notorious incidents in broadcasting history, especially in New York. Soupy Sales was hosting his very popular kids show on WNEW-TV in New York and he had a minute to fill at the end of the show. He told his young viewers to go to their parent's wallets and find those little green pieces of paper and send them to him. The prank cost him a two week suspension and caused a viewer uproar.
Anyone remember the incident? I was only three when it aired when I grew up in New Jersey and I was too young to remember it. |
