Default Social Services Office Needs To Change Their Rules Towards Helping Unemployed Men

I went to the social services office recently because I had applied for temporary cash assistance and medicare. I got a letter from them saying that I had applied for temporary disability assistance and I didn't apply for that. So I called the office and I talked to a woman who said I would have to come to the office if I wanna apply for temporary cash. So I go there and I talk to a woman and she tells me I gotta go to the social security office and apply for social security disability. She also told me that I gotta go to my doctor and get a copy of my medical records. Once I do that, then she said I have to come back to social services and give them the information and they make a decision whether or not I can get temporary cash. When she told me that, I was so mad because I felt like why should I have to go to social security office and apply for social security disability when I'm not disabled and why should I go to my doctor to get my medical records? That stuff shouldn't have nothing to do with me getting temporary cash. I need some damn money until I can get a full time job. If I could get a job, I wouldn't have come to them to apply for temporary cash.

Then I talk to the employment office yesterday and the lady tells me that I'm disqualified for unemployment money because I was fired from my previous job. She also tells me I should file a appeal to try to get eligibility for unemployment money. I told her I know I would lose if I filed a appeal and she said don't say that because I've seen people get their appeals overturned and I said yeah right. I'm not wasting my time filing a appeal because I know I'm gonna lose. The employment office already took my previous job's side and agreed with their decision as to why I was fired. So since they wanna be as*holes and not pay me, I'm gonna stop filing weekly claims and wait until my unemployment benefits expire in June and reapply for unemployment. I hope i'll have a full time job by next spring or summer so I won't have to deal with the employment office anymore.

I'm really disappointed in ya'll that nobody responded to this. This is a serious problem that needs to be talked about and nobody has anything to say about this. If any of ya'll were in my situation, i would respond to your topic and give you some advice. I know I'm not the only person in this situation because there's some black men that are in my situation and they're tired of being unemployed and homeless. I'm lucky I got a place to live because I know if my parents weren't around, I'd be homeless. I'm struggling to find a full time job and I can't get any money from social services or the employment office. I got a part time job and the money I'm getting isn't enough for me to take care of myself because I can't pay my parents rent and I can't pay for car repairs. Money I get is only enough to buy food, gas for my car and my 2 bills which is a credit card and car insurance.

I don't know when I'm gonna get a full time job because no jobs have been emailing me or calling me. I get pissed off emailing jobs and they ignore me as if I don't have nothing better to do than to be on the internet for hours looking for a job. I was lucky I got approved for health insurance from social services. So I'm grateful to them for helping me out with that. I'm supposed to be receiving my health insurance card in the mail in about a week and I'm gonna be provided with a list of health providers. Like I said, social services office needs to change their rules for helping unemployed men. It's really sad that unemployment and homelessness will always be problems in America because the government isn't really trying to help men that are in that situation and that's really pathetic. Social services is geared towards helping women whether they got kids or not and not single men. Then people wonder why crime is so high in black neighborhoods. I wouldn't even be going to social services for money if I could get a full time job.

What I plan on doing when I get my health insurance card is going to see a doctor and getting tested to see if I have a learning disability. If I get diagnosed for having that, then I'm gonna apply for social security disability and see what happens because it's possible I may not be able to work a full time job ever again.

I feel for you. It is an awful run around. You have to run here and there and it gets very discouraging.

I'm sorry Isiahthomas. I have been away for a few days. I'm sorry you are having problems. It is hard dealing with unemployment and trying to find jobs when the economy is bad, and than trying to get some financial help and getting a run around. Hope things get better for you!

Thanks ya'll for your support. I'm glad you two responded to this because this is a serious problem that needs to be discussed and I'm surprised this topic hasn't gotten more responses. Unemployment and homelessness are 2 serious problems in America that are never gonna go away unless the government helps people especially men who are in these situations. Like I said, social services is geared towards helping women more than men and that's not right. There's more men that are unemployed than women and they need money and a place to live. I don't know why social services believes that it should be easier for men to get a job than women and that's bullsh*t because it's not easy to find a job especially when you're a black man. I wish ya'll could've seen how many black men were at the social services office when I went there. It was a long line of blacks and there were more black men than black women. I saw a couple of Hispanics there but it was mostly blacks.

I was fired and appealed and the decision was overturned. So always appeal

In 2009 I had filed for unemployment because my previous job fired me, dont know how those benefits work because I thought you had to have quit your job in order to qualify but they approved me and gave me unemployment checks.

Ive never gone to social services for cash so I don't know how that works.

By emphasizing I never received a verbal or written warning. So I never was given the opportunity to improve after I Made the mistake

Well I was given a verbal warning. So that's why I didn't wanna file a appeal because I know I'm gonna lose. I went ahead and filed a appeal today and I'm gonna have a hearing on January 8th. So I'm gonna wait and see if i lose because i got a feeling I'm gonna lose. If i lose, then I'm gonna ask the employment office what do i have to do next to get unemployment money. If they tell me i might have to get a lawyer and file a appeal again, then I'm not gonna do that because i can't afford a lawyer. I'm waiting to get my health insurance card in the mail because when i get that, I'm gonna see a doctor and get tested to see if i have a learning disability. If i get diagnosed for that, then I'm gonna apply for social security disability. Then i might have to get a lawyer for that because i might get denied. I heard that getting social security disability money is hard because a lot of people have applied for that and they've gotten denied.

Isiah, I hope your luck turns around. It seems you have to have one foot in the grave to get any type of help. I mean the economy isnt that great and you need help. I mean maybe write your local town officials, maybe they can help you? I mean, lets face it, any money you do have is to pay bills. Thats not right.

If you didn't receive a written warning then you may have a shot. A written warning lets you know that your job is in jeopardy

I didn't receive a written warning. What I'm gonna do is if I lose my appeal, I'm gonna stop filing weekly claims and I'm gonna wait until my unemployment benefits expire in July. Then i'll reapply for unemployment but if my disqualification is still on my record when I reapply, then I'm not gonna reapply. It really pisses me off that the employment office won't pay me anyway when they owe me money since I was laid off from my job. I shouldn't have to give them 2 jobs each week when I file my weekly claim to get money. If I didn't have this part time job, I don't know what the hell I would do to get money because social services doesn't wanna give me money unless I give them a copy of my medical records and I gotta apply for social security disability which is bullsh*t when I'm not disabled. I really hate this world because it sucks the stuff that unemployed people gotta go through to get some money when they can't find a job.
