Mark Hamill reveals George Lucas' plans for Luke Skywalker to take on an Obi-Wan Kenobi-like role in an interview from 30 years ago.

It is certainly an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan, as the internet continues to buzz about the release of the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens this past Thanksgiving weekend. Although franchise creator George Lucas is not directly involved in this sequel after selling LucasFilm to Disney in 2012, a 1983 interview with Mark Hamill reveals that George Lucas always had plans to return to his beloved galaxy, far, far away. While promoting Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi 30 years ago, Mark Hamill says that George Lucas had asked him about playing an "Obi-Wan type" character, predicting that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would arrive in 2011.

This is incredibly prophetic, and hints that George Lucas always had a long-term plan for his beloved franchise. It isn't clear what else he may have had in store for this series and its characters. I've heard this before- yeah, I do believe George Lucas had long range plans for Star Wars like this- nice to see it all being fleshed out finally. I'm still not sure that these movies really need to be made- the six existing movies work pretty well together as it is- but I am a Star Wars fan and I will certainly be interested to see Episodes VII, VIII and IX. (Especially if Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 all show up in them each.)

Around the time of Return Of The Jedi, there was talk and rumours that there would be nine films in all. Lucas po-pooed that after the release of Revenge Of The Sith nearly ten years ago, but he probably didn't anticipate selling Lucasfilm to Disney at that point.
