Exclamation Ray Rice Gets Back in NFL after Winning Appeal

Ray Rice Wins Appeal to Overturn Indefinite NFL Suspension
Nov 28, 2014
by Sadie Gennis

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice won his appeal of an indefinite suspension Friday and has been reinstated to the NFL. Rice, who was suspended for knocking his then-fiancé Janay Rice unconscious in February, is now eligible to sign with any NFL team.

"I would like to thank Judge Barbara Jones, the NFL Players Association, my attorneys, agents, advisors, family, friends and fans -- but most importantly, my wife Janay," Rice said in a statement Friday.

"I made an inexcusable mistake and accept full responsibility for my actions. I am thankful that there was a proper appeals process in place to address this issue. I will continue working hard to improve myself and be the best husband, father and friend, while giving back to my community and helping others to learn from my mistakes."

Rice was originally only suspended for two games, plus an additional fine of one week's salary. But after a video from inside the elevator where Rice hit Janay was posted online in September, the Ravens let Rice go, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him indefinitely, claiming the video revealed a "starkly difference sequence of events."

Former U.S. District Judge Barbara S. Jones, who heard Rice's appeal, concluded that since Rice did not lie or mislead Goodell, "the imposition of the indefinite suspension was arbitrary."

Throughout the ordeal, Janay Rice has stood by and defended her husband, whom she married a little over a month after the incident in Atlantic City.

Earlier this month, she gave an in-depth interview to share her version of what happened in the elevator, admitting that neither she nor Rice even remember what they were arguing about. "It was that insignificant," Janay told ESPN.

"As we were arguing, he was on his phone and not looking at me. I went to reach for his phone, and when he grabbed it back, he spit at me and I slapped him," she continued. "We got into the elevator and what happened inside is still foggy to me. The only thing I know -- and I can't even say I 'remember' because I only know from what Ray has told me -- is that I slapped him again and then he hit me. I remember nothing else from inside the elevator."

Janay said that Rice took full responsibility for the incident, but that nothing could have prepared them for the first video of the assault to leak.

"The video didn't make me rethink our relationship, but I did want more of an explanation from him," Janay said. "I asked him why he left me on the floor like that. I asked him how he felt when he saw that I was unconscious. He told me he was in shock. I asked him what happened when we got out of the elevator. He told me he was terrified because security was there. I asked him how he felt seeing me like that. He said he was thinking, 'What did I just do?' I didn't watch the video again."

"We know our incident led to very important discussions to hashtags of 'why I stayed; and 'why I left.' If it took our situation becoming headline news to show domestic violence is happening in this country, that's a positive," Janay concluded. "I hope when people read this they realize that we're real. I want people to know how much we love each other and how far we've come. Everyone has their own story, this is mine."

The couple also sat down with Matt Lauer for a two-part interview that will air on Monday and Tuesday on the "Today" show.

"I just knew he hit me, and I was completely over it. I was done," Janay tells Lauer. "Of course in the back of my mind and in my heart, I knew that our relationship wouldn't be over because I know that this isn't us, and it's not him."

Cool

Ray Rice has only won the right to get back into the NFL. He won'y actually be back in unless or until he convinces one of the teams to sign him to a contract. I'm still hoping that won't happen.

I was glad Ray Rice won his appeal and got reinstated. I don't think he should've been suspended for a long time because of what he did and the Ravens shouldn't have cut him. I bet if a white player had done what he did, he wouldn't have gotten a harsh suspension like Ray did. What Ray did was very bad because I don't like seeing men beat up women but there's no way he should've been suspended for a long time and gotten cut by the Ravens. I also don't like what the NFL did to Adrian Petersen. I hope somebody signs Ray and I hope what he did never happens again. Men need to learn when they have a problem with women that they need to talk to them instead of putting their hands on women and hurting them because hurting them will lead you to trouble.

DITTO to what MARVO said.....

and let me add, maybe if we are lucky neither Ray Rice or Darren Wilson
will get rehired into a position at their old jobs.......

McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken are both hiring......

Who is Darren Wilson? I think that's harsh for you to say Ray Rice shouldn't play football anymore and he should go work at a fast food place.

Darren Wilson is the St. Louis Police officer that shot Michael Brown.....

In MY opinion it is not HARSH...... neither of them have been "convicted" of any crimes..... but there is ALOT of evidence that both of their characters need to take a step back and realize that no one..... including myself are innocent until proven guilty!

What more evidence do YOU need in the Ray Rice case????

Take it,
EZ

P.S. Hey Ray... can I have some FRIES with that order!

Whatever. Ray Rice is gonna get signed by a team. So deal with it. I didn't see anything wrong with what Darren Wilson did. Mike Brown deserved to be shot because he shouldn't have been fighting with him and trying to take his gun. He also shouldn't have stole some cigars outta the store and got into a argument with the store owner. He'd still be alive today if he hadn't done that.

Other NFL players who beat their wives and/or girlfriends and they never even got suspended, let alone get a life time ban.

So Ray Rice should not be singled out. And as you can see, I am a woman saying that.

It's Adrian Peterson's face who I never want to see again. But I'm sure I will next season.

When has Isiah Thomas ever done drugs? Please give me some info about that because I've never heard about that. Yeah I know about him allegedly sexually harassing a woman who used to work with him when he coached the Knicks. He wasn't found guilty about that. Thanks Dianne3. Yes there has been other NFL players that have beaten their wives or girlfriends and they didn't get in trouble like Ray did.

It's real EZ to find....... Just Google "Isiah Thomas Drug Overdose".....

On October 24, 2008, Thomas was taken to White Plains Hospital Center near his New York City area home after taking an overdose of Lunesta, a form of sleep medication. According to Harrison, New York police, they were called to Thomas's house, where, finding him unconscious but breathing, they had him transported to the hospital. Police Chief David Hall stated that they "are calling this an accidental overdose of a prescription sleeping pill.”

SURE IT WAS!!!!

If you believe that, I got a Bridge in Broooklyn for sale!!

Thanks for telling me that. You act as if he snorted cocaine hahahahahahahahahahaha. Taking sleeping pills is different than snorting drugs.

I know what you said. I'm just saying you act like Isiah Thomas is a bad person because he took some sleeping pills. I've never heard about him beating on women and killing anybody. Only thing I didn't like about his teammates is when he played for Detroit is when they would beat up their opponents because that's not the way to play basketball. I didn't like Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Rick Mahorn.
