Question Do you think it's ok to bring two young kids to work with you?

Should someone be allowed to bring their kids to work? What if the person has two young kids who argue, scream and bicker? They get into stuff and their parent doesn't keep them in line. Instead she is on the phone.

I pay a lady $50 a month, which is a lot for me. She only has to clean for one hour. $50.00 an hour is a good deal, if you ask me. She comes with her Aunt, who doesn't watch the kids. Her aunt cleans upstairs and she cleans downstairs. Her aunt does not speak any English. Today both the woman's 4 year old and 2 & 1/2 year old were screaming and arguing with each other several times. They were loud enough that I could hear them from upstairs in my room with the door closed.

I finally had to say something to her about it. This isn't the first time it's happened. It was the worst though. When she finally got off the phone I talked to her about it. She got an attitude about it. I asked her if she could please have her husband or someone else watch them. She said that it's too expensive to have a babysitter.

Most jobs would never allow someone to bring their kids to work and be allowed to talk on the phone.

If she really must bring them, it is her duty to make them behave. She needs to bring toys, and snacks and things to keep them occupied. If they are only there an hour there is no reason they should be acting up. Different if they were there all day and bored. I could see them getting cranky and acting up. There is no reason why they can't behave for an hour. Well a 2 1/2 year old can be difficult, but with the two women the child should be able to be kept in line The mother needs to discipline them better. And BTW why is she on the phone when she is supposed to be cleaning? That would tick me off too. If I was paying somebody 50 dollars they need to stay off their phone and clean!!

I think it depends on where someone works and what the company's policies are.

Since you hired this person and she comes to your house, then it's whatever you say goes. If things don't change then it's time to get somebody else.

Does she work independently or does she belong to some agency that sends cleaning people out? I would then complain to those people as well.

My supervisor used to bring her kids to work quite a bit and they were pretty well behaved. Of course they were kids and argued a little. But that didn't bother us. We like having them around and we didn't let their noises bother us. Maybe she can't get a baby sitter and her husband works. It's not easy working and get a baby sitter for your kids. I guess you better get yourself another house keeper who doesn't have kids.

Has society changed. Here is a woman with children and the child doesn't go to daycare, school or grandma, but must be taken to work. Wasn't years ago, a woman who either didn't have children or children were older who worked. Young children weren't shuttled off with mother to be attended to. I personally think it isn't up the the employer to say bring along your child. It is so sad that woman today can't make enough money to either stay home with the child or hire someone to care for the child.

Oh No

I'm sorry to say this but...

Find someone else! This woman can find a relative to take care of the kids or let the aunt take care of the kids for 1/2 an hour and the mom the other half. And if it was me and all she did was have her kids be rambunctious and be on her phone...I would have a few words with her and if she cuts an attitude...I'd fire her...in an unpretty way (I'm sorry, I have a short temper).

I'd even talk to her supervisor and she'd be fired before she can pick-up her phone!

Thanks for the thoughts. I will have to see how it goes. If it continues the way it is, I will have to try and find someone else. She seems ungrateful for the $50 and has asked for more. I explained to her that I can't afford more. I think $50 for only one hour of work is more than generous, imo.

No, she doesn't work for an agency. She was recommended by my mother who's now housband has had the woman clean for him for years. There wasn't a problem until she had kids and they got to a certain age. It wouldn't be a big deal if the kids were well behaved, but they're not. I know I can't expect much out of a 2 & 1/2 year old, but between her and the 4 year old boy, it's becoming a real problem.

I personally would let her go. Taking your kids to work is the exception, not the rule. It's not even safe, with them running up and down the stairs. They also could break something. It's just a bad situation all around. Then she gets funky with you; no way. She's not worth the aggravation, in my opinion anyway. Do what's best for you, Jenny.

If they are doing a decent job and not robbing you blind, buy some earplugs.

Thanks Janice. You have a good point.

In this case I don't think earplugs is enough. Plus, with the kids runing wild they could break something.

If the kids are running through the house or up and down the stairs then I would find someone else immediately. If one was to fall down the stairs and get hurt or worse the mother could possibly sue and you don't need that.

I realized it's not fun having kids running around your house, but it's not easy finding a daycare provider to take care of your kids cheaply. Here is a story of a daycare provider who drugged her chareges with cough syrup. The reason why the parents chose her? Because she was cheap only $100 a week. You should be more understanding and keep your breakables out of reach. And put earplugs in your ears.

I'd look for someone else. Sounds like a bad situation all the way around and Charles and Janice make some very strong points for canning her.

Good point. I don't need that and can't afford to be sued. Her kids do like the stairs.

It's not my job to put up with her kids. It's her responsibility to look after her own kids. Kids are expensive. She chose to have kids. I like kids, but this woman's are out of control. Do you think it's ok that the kids scare my cat Romeo to the point that he hides under my bed everytime they come? If the kids were well behaved it wouldn't be a problem.

You expect me to try and put away the breakables for her kids? Some of the things that are breakable belong to my mother. I shouldn't have to kid proof my home for an hour a month.

I seriously doubt you would like it if two unruly kids came to your house, ran around, screamed and argued, got into stuff, etc. Plus you had to pay their mother to clean knowing that her full attention isn't on her work, but on the phone and an occasional word to the kids.

I don't want to argue with you so I'm done debating.

Enough with the earplugs. Jenny is blind, so she needs ALL of her other senses. It's also not Jenny's duty to put up unruly kids because some nut hurt kids in a daycare somewhere. The cleaner has a month to find a sitter for an hour. It's on her, not Jenny. I'm certainly sure Jenny wouldn't have much trouble finding someone who is looking to make $50 for an hour's work.
