FOX has a very creative drama called Sleepy Hollow, based on the 18th century story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Midway through its second season this series stars Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane and Nicole Beharie as police detective Abbie Mills. The pair are usually faced with episodic mystery along with a long-term goal of saving mankind from the clutches of evil. The series is a mix of high tech detective work alongside the historical backdrop of revolutionary war times, brought back to life by Ichabod’s own personal memories. The series has been slumping in the ratings, therefore here are 5 ways to breathe new life into a very clever series that shows great promise.

Dial up the Spook Factor

The plot line of Sleepy Hollow follows the newly resurrected Ichabod Crane (Tim Misen) and his wife Katrina (Katia Winter) as they fight for the future of mankind with 21st century police officer Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie). Much of the battles take place between Ichabod and his son, Henry (John Noble) aka the Horseman of War (the second of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse). According to the original story of Ichabod Crane, he is scared of just about anything around him, so too should this show project the spookier factor. With headless horsemen running about, this shouldn’t be difficult.

Put an Original Spin on Battle Between Good and Evil

As Abbie and Ichabod work together to save mankind, we recognize that this is another exploration of the battle between good and evil. The writers at FOX have shown that they can think out of the box when it comes to this show. Putting an original spin on the battle between good and evil is a great way for them to flex their creative muscle and give a new story along with the same theme.

More Sparks with Ichabod & Abbie

Ichabod has been busy trying to free his wife Katrina from his 18th century romantic rival Abraham (Neil Jackson) (aka the Horseman of Death). But just recently, Katrina has decided to stay with Abraham on the premise that she will discover Abraham’s dastardly plans. With Katrina out of the picture it gives more time for some sexual tension to develop between the very hot Ichabod and the lovely, yet confident Abbie. Such romantic moments will definitely keep viewers tuned in each week.

Stop ‘Getting us up to Speed’ We’re Already There

During much of season one Ichabod refers to a point in history and a little bit of a history lesson occurs. As this was an important plot tool in the beginning, it is really not necessary any longer and it often distracts from the action in the episodes.

Don’t Exile Characters to Purgatory

Having Abbie exiled to purgatory was a great way to tie the last of season one to the beginning of season two, but now FOX writers must come up with other ideas that create peril in the show. Fans of this show are going to expect the clever and inventive story lines to continue and by doing so, FOX could make their creative writing a trademark to the show’s popularity.

I don't think that the show is "broken" - they are still producing well-written and well-produced episodes every week, and putting together the two main characters romantically is just a stupid crutch that shows do out of desperation when the ratings start to slip. Ichabod has stated repeatedly that he loves Katrina and intends to remain faithful to her. The "historical corrections" that Ichabod makes aren't distracting, they are mild details that make the show more interesting; they shouldn't need to dumb it down for the few people that can't focus on more than one thing at once. I don't understand how they can claim that they are over-using purgatory when they have only used it as a plot device ONCE.
