I Have A Learning Disability

I wanted to post about this because this is a serious situation for me and it's preventing me from getting a job. One of the symptoms of a learning disability is trying to get and keep a job which is something that I have a hard time with. Only reason I was at my last full time job for 9 years is because the job wasn't that hard and it was easy work. I struggle with challenging jobs that are hard and that's why I wasn't able to keep my previous jobs at factories, Walmart, Target, dollar store. Cleaning and porter work are the only jobs I'm good at because those are the only jobs I've kept for a long time. My last part time cleaning job, I was there for 10 years and the reason I left is because I found a better part time cleaning job that I have now because it's not too far from where I live and the pay is better. My last part time cleaning job was too far from where I live and my supervisor wanted me to do extra work and didn't wanna pay me overtime.


I recently applied for welfare money and medicare and I hope I get approved because I need some extra money because the money I get from my part time cleaning job isn't enough to pay for rent and car repairs. It's only enough money to pay for groceries, gas for my car and pay my credit card bill and car insurance. If I get approved for welfare money and medicare, I'm gonna schedule a appointment to see a doctor to see if I can get diagnosed for a learning disability so I can apply for SSI money. Who knows when I may get a full time job and it seems like I'm gonna be without a full time job for a long time because no cleaning and porter jobs have called me in awhile and I don't know why because I have experience with those jobs. I believe a lot of Hispanics in this area are taking those jobs and that's why I haven't gotten called for them. That's why I've been considering moving back to Cleveland because there aren't a lot of foreigners there and I could possibly get a cleaning job there.


I decided to talk about me having a learning disability because I want people to know who may have this problem that there's nothing wrong with admitting that there might be something wrong with you. Don't be afraid to talk to a doctor or a psychiatrist about your problem because there's nothing wrong with getting help. I know some people are gonna laugh at me and diss me and say I'm lazy and I'm trying to avoid getting a job so I can get some money from the government and sit on my ass but that's not true. I'm not lazy at all because I used to have 2 jobs for 9 years before I lost my last full time job. I also worked 2 jobs for awhile when I lived in Cleveland. So keep me in your prayers. It's really messed up that this has happened to me because I wanna work and it sucks being without money and not being able to buy things I wanna buy like movies, music cd's, clothes, sneakers, going to a restaurant, car.

I've been on SSI/SSDI for three years, have a learning disability, and work.

It only varies on how much you make or how much you're renting, etc.

I didn't know you get SSI money. How did you qualify for it? Did you see a doctor to get diagnosed for a disability? How much money you get a month if you don't mind me asking?

I did see a psychiatrist a couple of times to see if I have a learning disability and the only thing he suggested to me was that I take some medication. I told him I need some money. Taking pills isn't gonna make my problem go away because I need money to survive. He should've given me a test to take to see if he could diagnose me for a learning disability.

As I have Asperger's syndrom, I can somewhat relate. Except that cleaning would be the last thing, that I would want to work with (I'm really bad at it).

you have SSI AND SSDI?? I didn't know you could get them both; that's great!

I don't think this is the first time you mentioned a learning disability here... but anyway...

A friend of mine with a learning disability got help through ACCESS, which is a New York State organization that provides aide for people with various disabilities. They paid for him to get an IQ test (which can cost up to $1,000) and this helped figure out what is strong points and weaknesses were.

His psychiatrist, after seeing the results and through his own evaluations, prescribed him something to help stabilize his anxiety. Then ACCESS helped him set up job training programs.



I think the best thing is for you to get a full physical/mental evaluation. Do you have an official diagnosis? A similair organization where you are can then help you find work and the meds a doctor prescribes may help stabilize what's going on.

"Pills" may not make the problem go away, but finding out what exactly is wrong and maintaining it would help you out on the job.

No I haven't been diagnosed yet but I'm waiting to hear from Maryland social services to see if I qualify for welfare money and medicare so I can schedule a appointment to see a doctor. I don't have health insurance. So that's why I haven't seen a doctor to get diagnosed. MrCleveland, how did you get SSI and SSDI money?

With the new Obama care laws , you should have medicare already! I think? Unless it is different state to state. In California it is called Medi-Cal. Free healthcare to all low income people. Physical, mental and dental!

Thanks for telling me that. What's the name of the health care coverage? It's called Obamacare? I'm gonna have to look up some information on that and see if Maryland has it. Maryland should have it since the president is nearby in Washington DC.

Well it came into law that everyone had to have health insurance. The deadline to sign up was March 31st of this year! (But like I said this was in California, I don't know if it varies state to state) . But what I know out here was if a person didn't have health insurance, they had to bring proof of income (recent check stubs, tax return form) , ID, birth certificate, proof of citizenship , ETC. and there were places set up to enroll and sign up. If a person had no or little income, they get the Medi-cal which is Medicare in other states. Or if they are above the poverty line , they make you pay a little, affordable, like a sliding scale. My son went through this process, he signed up at a free clinic and qualified for the Medi-cal.

I think you would look on line under Obama care health to get started , get a phone # and see where you could sign up in your area. Not really sure. I can ask my son exactly whet he did, and get back to you.

I tried to apply for Obamacare health care you were talking about but they wanted to know my household income and i don't know my parents income and they wouldn't give it to me anyway. So i didn't apply for it. Since i applied for welfare recently, i also applied for medicare. So i'm waiting to hear from them for a interview. I called them today and i left a message. I hope they get back to me soon because i need health insurance because i wanna go see a doctor to see if i have a learning disability so i can get approved for SSDI money.

are you over 26? if so you can't be on their coverage anyways - you should just apply as an individual and work out your household income for yourself only.
