Would the show have been better without the New Kid in Town?

No way! Tabitha was great. I think Bewitched did a better job of adding a baby than I Love Lucy did. It was always fun to see Sam's little witch in training.

Tabitha was a great addition to Bewitched. Darren and Sam had a good marriage (aside from her family being a bit of a thorn in Darren's side a lot of the time) but his and Sam's relationship was good. He had a good job. They had a beautiful big home. Perfect scenario for having children. And Tabitha was such a beautiful child.

Tabitha got to be very annoying and bratty once Adam was born. The Tabitha-centric episodes and Aunt Clara episodes are my least favorite.

If anyone knew how to deal with chidren in TV series, it was William Asher. You may recall he directed the "I Love Lucy" episodes surrounding Lucy's pregnancy and birth of Little Ricky, which were the examplars of introducing a new baby into a TV series. So William Asher drew on that experience when Liz became pregnant three times (she was pregnant when the pilot was filmed, in fact!). And, being her husband at the time, he was responsible for Tabitha and Adam, too! It is often said that Little Ricky gave a new perspective to "I Love Lucy" by giving the series a new dimension, but the question as to whether Tabitha was a witch--and whether Adam was a "warlock or washout"--gave them far more interaction with Mom, Dad and others than Little Ricky ever had in "I Love Lucy." Admittedly, California child labor laws limited how often Little Ricky, Tabitha and Adam appeared after their "births," but I honestly think "Bewitched" went further with the children than "Lucy" ever did. |
