Music you'd recommend to others - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

So what are some unusual/not too famous/or in need of a revisiting artists you like and would recommend to others? I'm not talking about Pink, or Shakira, or Linkin Park, or any other famous at-the-top-of-the-charts-now artist. I'm talking about the artists where all your friends stare at you blankly and go "Who?" when you mention them, or say, "Oh, they're not hip anymore."

I'm always interested in hearing about new and different kinds of music. I could come up with a few really great artists that probably no one here as heard of at all, but for starters I'll mention someone we've all probably heard of that I think is worthy of revisiting: Alanis Morissette.

Sometimes it seems like she's gained the status of New Kids on the Block, and by that I mean it's like she has the status of an artist we all listened to, (at least anyone my age did) but don't like to admit it several years later. (You pre-New Kids era peeps may not know what I mean, but may a few years from now when you can't believe you used to listen to *NSync or BSB)

I just got her new CD today (it was on sale for $9-a newly released CD!) and I really enjoy it. I actually have all 3 of her albums, though for some reason I never got around to listening to Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (you know how it is, so many CDs, so little time). At any rate, I've been a fan since Jagged Little Pill (I can still sing along to like every word on that album, even though I haven't listened to it in ages) and I did actually see her in concert back in high school.

Anyway, I think she's really matured as an artist. On her new album she finally breaks away from powerhouse producer Glen Ballard, and produced it herself. She has gone from doing strictly vocals to playing most of her own instruments, and she writes all of her own songs (before Glen Ballard usually shared writing credits).

I can understand how her voice might irritate some people, but personally I like singers with very distinctive voices (thus my love of Steven Tyler). I like to be able to immediately recognize who I'm listening to, I think that is the mark of a good artist as much as songwriting.

I really respect artists who do most of the work themselves, as she is now doing. I would say that if you ever liked Alanis (and maybe even if you didn't), her new album Under Rug Swept is worth checking out.

And in case you're wondering there is much less angst and screaming on this album than there was on Jagged Little Pill. The songs are mature and introspective. In fact there is a song on there called "A Man" which almost seems to be the exact opposite of the acidic almost anti-man "You Oughta Know" that made her famous. (that's still a great catharsis song though). Anyway, it's all about men feeling frustrated for being blamed for so many things, such as the oppression of women. (Although really sometimes I think men think all feminists are male haters, when in actually it is quite possible to hate systems of patriarchy without hating men, BUT, I digress.......)

Please tell us a little bit about them. (You don't have to write a book like I did

-my I do have a tendency to ramble on don't I? I'm truely sorry I don't mean to) But at the very least tell us what genre of music it is and specific album titles you recommend. If it's an artist you own and love several albums of, try to think of what would be a good album for someone who has never heard the artist before. Feel free to provide more info as you see fit.

Higher octave music(Or its Cusco).... I think there name is Cusco, , anyway they have some real relaxing songs. I recommend listening to Inca Dance or Montezuma. Hey Jenny, these are the two songs i sent you, actully i got them off a website, they were only 30 second parts of the songs.

What I would recommend would be something like up-and-coming bands like The Strokes(I've played their album OUT), or Starsailor (another indie British import. Sorta like Coldplay, but different. In a good way, of course... )

I dig Jimmy Eat World. Their recent self-titled album is a beautiful record, yet raw at the same time. I've listened to it at least for an hour a day since I got it two weeks ago.

Actually, I'm really getting into odd new wave/ska stuff from the early 80s. Not just the popular stuff like "Melt With You" and Devo, etc. Stuff like...
The Specials, Oingo Boingo, Psychadelic Furs, The Smiths, Madness, Echo and the Bunnymen.
Bands which I would recommend to anyone.

Actually I was going to post that, but she did, so, yes. Jimmy Eat World is SUCH a cool band. I really love their songs.

Anyways.... Jaci Velasquez. She's a Christian artist. Now, I don't know how religious you are, but even if you aren't, these are relaxing songs. And they aren't the type of Christian where the word "God" or "Jesus" is mentioned 3875 times in a minute.

Grits It stands for Grammatical Revolution In The Spirit. Grits is a gospel rap duo. They are my favorite artists on the planet. They have major talent. Their albums have excellent lyrics and excellent production. Something that gets me kind of mad is that people tend to make false assumptions about christian music. People who have never heard of some of the more popular christian rock or rap groups assume that the music is of poor quality and inferior to mainstream secular music. Those people are wrong. So many people want to complain about how negative hip hop and rap is and the problem is that they don't even now that gospel rap exists. People really need to explore more with their taste in music. I don't care weather an album has sold 10 copies or 10 million copies. If I like it then I'm going to keep listening to it. Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble on like this.
Here are some more great christian artists besides Grits. Rock Five Iron Frenzy, Audio Adrenaline, Supertones, Pax 217 and Bleach Rap Knowdaverbs, MG! The Visionary, John Reuben, Ill Harmonics and DJ Maj.

Well I dunno about everyone else, But I really like The Real McCoy. Not a lot of people know her since she was a hit in the early 90's, but I love her songs. But you can hear her songs in night clubs and all that. Also, Europeans really love thier techno, so that's how I really know her. Her songs are great ecpecially her # 1 "Another Night" Sorry for raving on and on, but if you're inot the whole night club or techno schene, or if you just want something good to listen to, give her a try!

I would say Pink b/c she is OBVIOUSLY the BESTEST SINGER IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!! She is who I m listenin to now...but u said...specifically...not her...so...um. The Spice Girls?!?! LOL!!! I still get made fun of for having there posters up in my room...I HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO TAKE THEM DOWN AND FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO REPLACE THEM WITH!!!

I've mentioned Alison Krauss before but this is an opportunity to go on about her. Alison sings, plays violin, viola and other string intruments, and also produces her cd's, with her band, "Union Station". She also makes guest appearances with many other bands because she is the best at what she does and, judging by what I saw of her in concert, she's a fun gal! She tells jokes and stories between songs. Her last two cds, I suggest anyone try. You don't have to like bluegrass or country, you couldn't pin this music down that simply; this is good music on any level and for most any taste. "Forget About It" and "New Favorites" are the titles of the cds.

Jane Monheit is a jazz singer. I haven't taken more than an outsiders interest in this type of music before, but a review I read sold me on givng her a try. I bought "Never Never Land" and have enjoyed playing it and trying to do the impossible (for me anyway), singing along with her. This is beautiful music. She has just recently put out a new cd and I think, now that I mention it, I'll pick that up this weekend.

I would like to mention Big Head Todd and the Monsters. It seems like most people have forgotten all about them. If you want to listen to a solid rock band they are great.

I have been a fan of theirs for years and can't wait to get their new album coming out at the end of the month. If you are unfamiliar with them I recommend getting their live album, Live Monsters – it's like a greatest hits collection and includes the songs "Bittersweet", "Please Don't Tell Her" and a bunch of others. Other great albums are Sister Sweetly and Beautiful World.

I'll have to check her out sometime. When I go home next week, I'm going to try to find a CD of hers at the library.

From how you describe her, she sounds a little bit like Dar Williams (of course I couldn't say for sure until I hear her). But if that's the case, then I think you might find her worthy of checking out.

Dar Williams is considered "new folk," but I think she's more folk/rock. Some acoustic guitar type stuff, especially her older work, but her newer albums have some more diversity on them. But Dar's strength is far and away her songwriting. She is one of my favorite songwriters of all time. Her songs are brilliant (for the most part)-they're simple, complex, funny, socially-conscious, and whimsical all at the same time. My favorite all-over album is The Honesty Room, but I think Mortal City or End of Summer would be a better beginning album. She also tells stories and is funny at concerts, self-depricating, not worried about when she makes mistakes (she'll take requests from the audience and sometimes if she hasn't played the song in awhile she needs help from the audience on the words, lol) She's on tour now actually, and her concerts only cost like $20.

Awhile back I participated in a contest where people were supposed to promote Dar on their collge campuses, so I have loads of Dar stuff just sitting in my room collecting dust, including sample CDs. If anyone here thinks they're really interested, I could mail a few out. I've got over 50 of 'em. PM me if you're interested.

Pat Benatar ~ She was one of those strong, independent ladies from the 80s. She sings "Love is a Battlefield", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Heartbreaker" and "We Belong"... those are just a few of her popular songs. She has a great voice and her music is wonderful. I highly recommend her!

Taylor Dane ~ Yet another 80s rock chick. Some of her famous songs are "With Everybeat of My Heart", "Love Will Lead You Back" and "Tell It To My Heart". Her voice is really powerful and addictive.

Tantric ~ They're sort of an up-and-coming band. They fall under the Alternative/Indie genre. You may have heard their song "Breakdown". They're kinda of like Creed... only better, in my opinion!

Dave Navarro ~ He's the guitarist from Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Jane's Addiction and he released his first solo album, Trust No One, in 2001. One of the singles from it called "Rexall" is one of my absolute favorite songs! I suggest you check out his music.

I'm with Cokies - I totally recommend Jimmy Eat World (bit of trivia for y'all - their 'self-titled' album was actually originally called 'Bleed American' but was tactfully re-named after September 11th. I actually have one of the original copies with the proper title).
