What a disappointing episode of "Strokes" that was (the hour-long "Arnold's Girlfriend")...you'd think the brass at NBC would've selected either "Arnold's Hero" (guest-starring Muhammad Ali), the two-parter "The Adoption" (guest-starring Whitman "Grady" Mayo), or even "Feudin' and Fussin'" (the second crossover featuring the casts of "Strokes" and its "sister series," the infamous [and much-maligned] "Hello, Larry") as the season two opener.

In my opinion, the only saving grace of "Arnold's Girlfriend" was Dabney Coleman's performance as bigoted Midwestern cattleman Fred Tanner; other than that, the episode is dismal and ends up in "after school special" territory.

I wasn't a huge fan of season 1 because they had willis and arnold looking so dirty

I think the first season of "Strokes" is brilliant, TVFactFan. Arnold and Willis were getting acclimated to their new surroundings; in other words, they were still learning the ropes. Many (if not all) of the episodes aired during season one are hilarious.

It wasn't until season two when "Strokes" became a mainstay on NBC's then-floundering network lineup, due to its instant success during season one. NBC used the success of "Strokes" as a launching pad for other series ("The Facts Of Life" and [to a much lesser extent] the infamous "Hello, Larry").

They just had the look like Mr. Drummond found them on the street since their hair wasn't combed and their clothes looked kind of dingy
