I came across what I believe to be Consagra's mugshot taken not long after he was charged with the murder of Freddie Douberley and Marylou Holmes. It is pasted below.
I wanted to use this opportunity to discuss a new theory I had on the case that actually came about as a result of my conversations with another poster. Out of all the discussions about the case that have been had on this forum, most focus on motives that Consagra and/or "Ted" might have had to kill Freddie, either because he was an informant in the stolen property ring, or because he had bought a truck from Glen Consagra and refused to make payments. These theories really don't adequately explain why Consagra (or someone else) may have targeted Mary Lou, aside from the fact that she was a witness and presumably had to be eliminated. However, some recently unearthed newspaper articles on the case made me think of another possibility that actually shifts the focus away from Freddie and on to Mary Lou. Admittedly, all the pieces were there, and had been there for some time, I just didn't start putting it together until recently. As Stephen Geri said during his interview on UM about the death of his wife, there are two things that make the world go round: money and sex. Turning to the Consagra case, is it possible that what happened on the spoil bank that night could have been sexually motivated? Consider the following facts: - Freddie and Mary Lou were common law husband and wife. In other words, they had lived together long enough to be considered legally married in the state of Florida. - Court documents allege that there had been a sexual relationship between Glen Consagra and Mary Lou. - The three friends were said to quarrel regularly (though reasons weren't specified) and Consagra once allegedly stated that he was going to kill Freddie and Mary Lou both and feed their bodies to the crabs. - A pubic hair belonging to Consagra was found on Mary Lou's body. - The shotgun (which would have inflicted more damage) was used on Mary Lou. Freddie was shot with the .22. - As I believe DarkDante once pointed out, the cover up of the murder is certainly slipshod and sloppy enough and has the earmarks of a crime of passion. - Consagra pleaded "guilty" to second degree murder in Freddie's death. Yet he pleaded "no contest" to second degree murder in Mary Lou's death. This last point is especially interesting. Admittedly, I never understood what possible legal advantage pleading guilty to one murder charge and pleading no contest to another identical charge would have served Consagra. One thought I did have though: the "no contest" charge basically means that the defendant is not denying the charges, but not admitting to them either, and thus does not have to make any statement to the court regarding that specific crime. They certainly do not have to admit guilt on open court. On the other hand, we know Consagra pleaded guilty to Freddie's death and was cross-examined by the judge and did admit that he, in fact, killed Freddie. My whole point is that given the fragile nature of the relationship between Freddie, Mary Lou and Glen Consagra, the past sexual antics, the pubic hair being found, the use of the shotgun, and Consagra's silence on the issue of exactly what happened to Mary Lou, as afforded by his pleadings in the case makes me wonder if the crime was sexually motivated. By Glen's own admission, they were all drunk that night. Perhaps bad feelings about this "relationship" between the three of them led to an argument. Perhaps Consagra and Mary Lou were fooling around, and that angered Freddie. It is even possible that Consagra raped Mary Lou. Interestingly, these theories all suggest reasons that Glen Consagra alone would have wanted to kill the couple, and wouldn't necessarily seek out help from others. |

I think the motive could have been a little bit of both: the threat of Freddie going to the cops about the stolen property ring, and jealousy over Mary Lou. I still think Consagra had to have had help. Someone had to help him off the island, and help him weigh down the bodies, destroy Freddie's boat, etc.

The only problem is that it should have been obvious from the start that Consagra had help for all of the same exact reasons we have mentioned -
- combined weight of the bodies and boat anchor - 2 guns - "dangerous" swim to shore. Those points should have been known to the police and prosecutors at the time Consagra was charged. Yet, they still charged him as if he was the sole shooter. That being said, I'm not saying that I think he's innocent. It's kind of like the Branion final appeal. The prosecution charged him as the sole shooter even though he probably hired someone to murder his wife. I just wonder how ethical such tactics are. |
