Default WARNING: DVD Review of Season 1

Thought the complete series was way too expensive so bought season 1 instead. Boy was I in for a surprise! Picture is very grainy with a white line on the right side of the screen going straight down with a very low sound quality. This release is NOT remastered!! Shame on Time Life for releasing this crap! I feel bad for those who bought the whole series and spent all that money for awful sound and picture quality.

Picture quality: 1 star

Sound quality: 1 star

I don't own this set yet but I also have a problem with the sound on the "Mama's Family" and "The Carol Burnett Show" sets. The menu music is so darn loud and the actual sound in the episodes is way too low. If you select the play all feature and it returns to the main menu, get ready for a speaker blowout.

I was going to buy the complete series locker set but I think I'll just buy the separate season sets when they're released. $250 is a huge chunk to lay out all at once. I like the show but it's not one of my absolute favorites.

I hadn't noticed on Mama's Family. I feel the same way about the show as you do thats why I went the individual sets route. I only paid 12 bucks for the first season but the picture quality and that white line....ugh...

I didn't notice a white line (I've only watched the first 2 episodes) but yes the picture quality is quite grainy and yet soft at times and oversaturated at others.

It's a faint white line on the right side of the screen where the picture meets the black bar. You must have your TV setting on 4:3 or original aspect ratio to see it; if you're setting is on widescreen, it probably won't be there but the picture will be stretched horribly.

Default Wonder Years complete series

Here is a review from DVD Talk.com:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/66477...te-series-the/

I personally don't think the picture looks as bad as you say.

The review explains that the show was shot on 16mm and transferred to tape so that would explain the quality somewhat.

Hope this helps...

I checked that site. It says that Winnie's parents divorced. While I recognize that that was on the verge of happening in the "How I'm Spending My Summer Vacation" episode with the cookout at the Coopers' house, they got back together again in the later episode where they performed the play "Our Town" at school.

For those of you who don't yet know, Fabulous Films in the UK has released a set with 100% of the original music (except they accidentally left the Netflix intro music on one Season 2 episode). If you haven't bought yet, buy that one instead! Video is 24fps/NTSC and all the special features are carried over. The US set has no benefits in any way.

They've also been quoted to say that a Blu-ray release is possible if sales are good enough!
Quote:
It has performed as expected in this climate, it is not cheap, as it cost a fortune to license and a fortune to clear and produce. It is great value and a brilliant gift, packed with 23 hours of bonus features and it should perform well over christmas. If it ends up doing well it could end up on Blu-ray, there are no plans in the US or UK for the foreseeable future though.
