Question Which actors or actresses starred in back to back long running shows ?

Kelsey Grammar (Cheers 1984-1993) (Frasier 1993 - present)

Sherman Helmsley (The Jeffersons 1975-1985) (Amen 1986-1991)

Marla Gibbs (The Jeffersons 1975-1985) (227 1985-1990)

Tony Danza (Taxi 1978-1983) (Who's the Boss pilot episode 1983-1992)

Patrick Duffy (Man from Atlantis 1977-1978) (Dallas 1978-1991 with the exception of a year in between) (Step by Step 1991-1998)

Any others ?

Randal: We said the same thing about "Jaws" when we were kids.

Dante: You were afraid to sit on the toilet!

Randal: Sharks swim in water...there's water in my toilet. I rest my case.

Dante: Sharks only swim in saltwater!

Randal: There's saltwater in my toilet!

Dante: You're so naive...

Sorry to nitpick (but here goes, anyway)

I guess it depends on what you define as back-to-back and long-running. There were almost five years between the end of "Archie Bunker's Place" and the beginning of "In the Heat of the Night" for Carroll O'Connor. And "The Man from Atlantis" only ran for one season.

That said, here are my picks:

Lucille Ball: "The Lucy Show" (1962-68) and "Here's Lucy" (1968-74)

Gavin McLeod: "Mary Tyler Moore" (1970-77) and "The Love Boat" (1977-86)

Ed Asner: "Mary Tyler Moore" (1970-77) and "Lou Grant" (1977-82)

Michael Landon: "Bonanza" (1959-73), "Little House on the Prairie" (1974-83), "Highway to Heaven" (1984-89)

Jack Klugman: "The Odd Couple" (1970-75) and "Quincy, M.E." (1976-83)

Klugman wouldn't count if you were really strict about it, because there was a season in between his two series. Neither would Landon, since he left "Little House" as an actor in 1982, although he did appear in the 1984 finale movie. And there was a year between the end of "Bonanza" and the airing of the "Little House" pilot.

Whew!

Okay, I don't want anyone getting nitpicky about the 4 year gap, but anyone who has had two back-to-back successes deserves to be on the list I think.

Martin Milner: Route 66 (1960-1964), Adam-12 (1968-1975)

Mary Tyler Moore: Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-1966), MTM (1970-1977)

------------------
Love ya, see ya here on the feud!

JOHNNY: You know, it must be expensive to have a baby nowadays.
ROY: It's expensive to have a hotdog nowadays.

NEWKIRK: No problem with that, sir. You just let me have one of our guns, and I'll put a nice little hole in between his eyes. It may not stop him, but it'll slow him down a bit.

CARTER: Piece of pie!
NEWKIRK: Cake, Andrew, cake.

LUCY: Oh, well, I thought you would want to play up the domestic angle. You know, how happily married Ricky is.
PHOTOGRAPHER: Well, we would ordinarily, you see, but Don Juan is all about love. It's got nothing to do with marriage.

LUCY: Yeah, he's pushing twenty-three, all right. In fact, he's pushed it all the way to thirty-five.

DAVY: Peter, as my devoted houseboy, what will be your main function?
PETER: I am born to serve my master and live only to perform his bidding!
DAVY: Right. Now get me my comb.
PETER: Get it yourself!

OSCAR: You want brown juice or green juice?
FELIX: What's the difference?
OSCAR: Three weeks.

By back to back I mean consecutive. One year in between is fine though.

Kirstie Alley...

"Cheers" (11 seasons) to
"Veronica's Closet" (3 seasons)

***Sure, 3 seasons is not as long as 11, but many shows don't even last three seasons.***

Well, someone posted actors who had four and five year gaps between series. If that's the case, Lucille Ball's run should be revised since she only had a two-year gap before "The Lucy Show":

"My Favorite Husband" (radio; 1948-1951); "I Love Lucy"/"The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show" (1951-1960); "The Lucy Show" (1962-1968); "Here's Lucy" (1968-1974)

Also, how 'bout Bob Newhart:
"The Bob Newhart Show" (1972-1978); "Newhart" (1982-1990)

And Raymond Burr:
"Perry Mason" (1957-1966); "Ironside" (1967-1975)
