Sad Has anyone lost a pet?

One of my cats died this weekend, she was gone before I had a chance to take her to the vet the next day. She was ten years old. My other cat, her sister, is fine, but seems confused about the "missing sibling".

Has anyone lost a pet? How did you deal with it? Sometimes it's hard for me not to feel some self-blame.

Sorry to hear about your cat. I can't remember how many pets I've lost, either by dying or running away. I once had a dog and a cat who were best friends that died around the same time. The cat died in his sleep and I made a little wooden coffin and while I was digging his grave in the backyard I noticed the dog just sitting on the porch watching me. He knew something was wrong because he would normally come over to see what I was doing. He kept from room to room whimpering, he no longer wanted to go for walks and eventually stopped eating. I buried him next to the cat.

I had a cat Ruben who was 14 years old. In his old age, he got sick to the point where he couldn't even walk. It was in June of 2009. I called to make an appointment for him to see the vet the next day, but he died that very night. I still remember after I got off the phone and went into his "cat room" he was already gone with his mouth and eyes open. I was bawling, crying uncontrollably. I know what you mean about blaming yourself. I always blamed myself like I should have made his vet appointment earlier. He's buried in my front yard now. I still miss him. He did so many tricks, just like a doggie and he came running when you would call his name. I'm glad he lived a somewhat long life (14 years) and toward the end, I let him eat all the treats he wanted because I knew his time was almost up.

I'm sorry for your loss - its heartbreaking when you lose that special little friend.

We've lost a few pets over the past couple of years and each time it has been terrible. I still miss each one of them and think of them often. I don't know that there is much that you can do to deal with it besides just experience your loss and mourn them for awhile, and when you feel up to it go through your old photos or videos of them and remember the good times.

Sorry to hear about your cat. It is so hard and sometimes you feel you should have done more. I have lost so many pets, Horses, dogs, a cat and a turtle. Sometimes to this day I will think about them and I still shed a tear.

I never thought losing a pet could be so painful until I lost my cat of over 16 years. It's heartbreaking, and I'm very sorry for your loss. Please don't feel guilty. When it's their time, it's their time. Time is the healer on this one.

I'm very sorry for your loss ABlairican Pie. My tortoiseshell cat died a few years ago. She was 15 years old and a sweetheart. I think about her everyday.

You will always feel some pain for the cat you lost, but as time goes by you will be able to remember her without feeling overwhelmed by grief. Don't blame yourself. You did the best you could do at the time.

Oh No

Sorry about your loss of your pet...I've had a dog 4 years ago which was named Sydney...that was the last time my family had a dog, and that was the year I moved out.

I also had many guinea pigs that I lost. I still love them to this day and miss them. Here's a song about a person losing his cat.

Sorry to hear about your cat. And all who have posted that have lost pets. It is very sad. They are very much a part of the family. I've had many cats and dogs over the years. Some have passed because they were old, and I had a cat hit by a car. That is really rough. And sad when you have to make the decision to put them down, but we don't want them to suffer. But remember they are no longer in pain, and I do believe their is a place for animals in heaven. We will see our beloved pets that have passed again!

I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is very hard. They become a part of your family.

I had a dog Jodi for seven and a half years (Dec. 1991-July 1999). When we moved, we think the moving experience was too much for her. We had a gold fish for the exactly same amount of time. We think paint fumes were too much for the gold fish. It still surprises people when they hear that we had a gold fish live that long.

I had a dog Max for 15 years (June 1985-July 2000). It was so sad when he died. I was the last one to see him alive and the one to find him. It broke my heart when he died.

I had a tabby cat Chava for six years (March 2002-March 2008). His kidneys shut down and he stopped wanting to eat and drink. We had to have him put down. He was the first cat I ever had.

I had a cat Cuddles for four years (2008-2012). She got sick. She was having accidents on the carpet, floor etc. With my visual impairment I had to find another home for her with someone who could see well enough to give her the special care she needed. Three days after she was given to a co-worker of my mother's, Cuddles went missing. To this day I still don't know what happened to Cuddles or if she was ever found. My mother refuses to talk about it.

Smile Thanks!!

Thanks, everybody. I guess I don't feel so bad when I feel that there was no way of knowing, their illness takes you by surprise. She seemed to have had the illness for a while, now that I think about it, she would act strangely, but I never attributed it to illness.

I'm just concerned about my other cat. She just sits and loafs in the cupboard, eating out of the cat food bag and not touching her plate on the floor. She seems "normal" but she senses something is wrong.

I think I would like to get another cat so she wouldn't be lonely. That's why I got the two of them ten years ago this week. It was in fact the week I last saw my mother alive and I needed to have some kitties to cheer me up.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Pets are like part of the family. I've lost so many over the years. They all hurt.

My favorite dog was Lady Bell. I pretty much grew up with her. I still remember the day she died. She was fine that morning. My Mom let her out in the back yard. About a half hour later my Mom came in and told me she thought Lady Bell was dead. I ran out back and she was underneath our camper. I kept calling her and she tried to get up but she couldn't. My Dad was at the fleamarket that day. It was on a Saturday. So we had a neighbor come over and take a look but she had already died by that time. I don't know what killed her. The only thing I can think of was she was bitten by a snake. That was May 1978. You just never forget things like that.

I talked with a vet clerk about the possibility of my cat being introduced to a new one with a proper space to become acquainted. It may be too early, but I'm still looking into it.
