Not necessarily meaning how it's placed on this forum - the Flintstones and Simpsons are both animated and sitcoms. The Muppet Show was a variety type of program, but there was always a thread of a story going on backstage. Does that make it a sitcom?

No, it was still a variety program.

This show was unique...it was a sketch/variety show yes, but it had some off-stage stuff as well.
So "The Muppet Show" would be under "other"! |

The show did have regular characters who appeared every week (Kermit, Miss Piggy, Scooter etc.) and did have a bit of a storyline. It kind of reminds me of the Jack Benny Program which had a very similar mix of sitcom and variety show elements.

I'd say The Muppet Show is both a variety show and a sitcom of sorts. It's not traditional, but then- not much about the show is traditional to begin with.
But I love both the production numbers and the interactions between Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Rowlf, Scooter, The Electric Mayhem, Sam, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Beaker, Robin, Sweetums, Rizzo, Statler and Waldorf and the rest of the cast.(I'm also a bigtime longtime Muppets fan. Yay for The Muppets! LOVE them!)
