Cool

I am satisfied with the verdict. She got what she deserved. I do believe that she does suffer from mental illness, but I don't buy the fact that she didn't know what she was doing when she waited for her husband to leave for work, filled the bathtub, and dumped her children in one by one. Those poor, innocent children did not need, or want, to die. I hope she gets the death penalty. She'll die in a much calmer, more pleasant way than her children did, but at least she'll pay for her crime.

A lot of people i've talked with think that they should drown HER in a bathtub! That'll teach her!

This woman methodically hunted down each of her children, dragged them through the house as they struggled to get away, then held them under water under they died. She repeated this process until she succeeded in killing all of her children. I have no sympathy for her. Give her the death penalty.

When this story first broke, newswoman Katie Couric, while reporting the story, felt compelled to talk about the legal defense fund set up for Andrea Yates. Couric then twice repeated the phone number for those wishing to contribute to the fund as though Andrea Yates was the victim in this horrific crime! I'm sure the "Free Andrea Yates" crowd will be mobilizing before too long.

Thumbs down

I was saddened when I heard she was found guilty. I know she drouned her kids, but she was homeschooling like 6 children, while she still had physchosis, and was having delusions that the devil was talking to her! I mean, her own HUSBAND, despite loosing his children has defended her till the very end, as have her doctors, who know her best. The people don't know her are the one's that think she should be found guilty, and the people who know her BEST think she was innocent! I just don't think she should've been found guilty, this is all my opinion.

One thing that sickens me about this country is that criminals have many more rights and advocates than their victims do. I personally feel no sympathy for Andrea Yates, or anyone who commits a crime.

Default NOT GUILTY

She DEFINITELY should have been NOT GUILTY . There have been SO many phsychiatrists or phycologist that have described how mentally ill she was. Post Pardum Depression and Skitsafrinnia are both very horrible. My guess is that the jury got emotional at the description of the children's death so that they couldn't think clearly.

BTW, I don't think in a way that allows "opinions" . There is RIGHT and there is WRONG. She was OBVIOUSLY not guilty because of her problems. I know this is right. I know the opposite is wrong. Opinions only exist in other matters.

In case you don't think skitsafrinnia is horrible, I saw a show telling people about it on (I think) the discovery channel. One girl said she saw a hooded figure in black that sometimes SPOKE to her, or even try to KILL her.

Exactly. She should not have been left alone. Her and her husband both knew she was going to do something very drastic one of these days, and it just happened.

Sorry, but I don't think mental illness should be used as a way to get out of a crime like this. Fine, she was ill, but then why didn't anyone do anything about it earlier?? This wasn't her first case of postpartum depression or psychosis. Plain and simple, a.) something should have been done earlier to help her with her illness, and b.) she honestly should have been strongly advised NOT TO HAVE ANYMORE KIDS! (Was she ever?) But because none of it was done, 5 innocent children suffered. Perhaps they're in a better place now though.

My thoughts exactly, Dawsongirl. I do believe that Andrea Yates really is mentally ill, but that's still no excuse for what she did. She committed a heinous crime and she should pay the price for her actions. I'm tired of people claiming insanity for committing a crime. I think anyone has to be mentally warped to be able to intentionally harm or kill another human being.

This is precisely the reason I feel sorry for Andrea Yates as well as for her poor children.

I am not sure how I feel about what the verdict should have been. I think that for laypersons (the jury) to have to try to translate medical information into a legal setting is a very hard thing to do...

But from what I've heard of this case, there is absolutely no question in my mind that this women was sick. I am not convinced she was in control of her faculties when she did this. The psychiatrist on the news tonight said that postpartum depression can lead to psychosis, and that in these cases the psychosis has a tendency to get worse with each successive child.

There is room in my heart to mourn the loss of this woman, who was so obviously in need of help, and no one reached out her. If someone had tried to help Andrea a long time ago, say after the first or second child, this probably would have never happened.

Less than 1% of all crimes that go to trial use an insanity defense.

Only about 25% of that 1% are argued successfully.

In nearly 80% of that 25%, both the prosecution and the defense agreed on the appropriatness of that plea before trial.

The only reason people are "tired of it" is because those are the cases we hear about the most, because they are the most sensational.

They are far and away not the norm, despite what the popular media may lead you to believe.
