Movie "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" Remake Trailer Released

The Phantom Killer Rises in the First Photos from The Town That Dreaded Sundown
by Ryan Turek
September 3, 2014

The long-awaited The Town That Dreaded Sundown remake – which pairs producers Jason Blum (Insidious) with Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) – is going to start hitting the film festival circuit this fall.

BFI London Film Festival is the first out of the gate and its website is sporting the very first images from the film. The photos give us a glimpse of the “Phantom” killer as well as star Addison Timlin.

"American Horror Story‘s" Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directs.

The original film, directed by Charles B. Pierce, took its inspiration from the 1940s Texarkana murders in which a “Phantom Killer” stalked the town, however, the remake is taking a more “meta” approach.

In this redo, Timlin plays a young girl who survives a copycat massacre at the film’s annual tribute screening and sets out to solve the mystery of who’s recreating the unsolved Sackhead murders, using clues from her own past.

Gary Cole, Dennis O’Hare, Veronica Cartwright and Joshua Leonard also star.

MGM is handling distribution. No word yet on a release date, however, we’ll have some news about this one very, very soon…

I remember being VERY creeped out by the promos for this back when it was released. But I wonder if all these years later after everyone has seen (and pretty much become numb to) a myriad of masked, wordless killers, if it can have any real impact?

Guess we shall see.

I had no idea they were redoing this one. The original had some extremely unsettling and scary scenes, especially when Dawn Wells' character is chased by the killer and the 1940's setting added to the mood. It would not surprise me with this remake if they decide to unmask the killer since the first one didn't, because the real Texarkana killer to this day has not been caught.

It doesn't matter if they unmask the killer or not as it's not supposed to be the original killer, but a someone recreating the killer of the original movie.

I'll watch it, but I'll go in with extremely low expectations. A missed opportunity to give us a docu-drama based on the real Texarkana Moonlight Murders. As much as I enjoy Pierce's version, and it's definitely my favorite of his films. The film's impact was lessened by the silly cop moments. Which happened to quite a few horror films back in the 70's and 80's (Last House On The Left, Halloween 5, etc.)

Not surprising at all though that this film is going this route.
