I have to say, with 2 seasons of viewing Three's Company under my belt that this show is BETTER than I remembered it being.
I don't know how much original input Nicholl Ross West put into the first 2 season scripts they wrote and how much was based on Man About The House, but they're funny. Often better than what the other writers come up with. Maybe the death of Don Nicholl hurt this show more than anyone realized. I don't think the scripts were that bad in the early seasons. One thing I notice is these scripts early on had a natural flow to the dialogue. If someone has something funny to say, they say it. I notice in later years every joke seemed to have a set-up punchline format. The dialogue in the 80s seemed a lot more forced and unrealistic based on my recollections. When I get to the episodes in the DVD set I'll see if I still feel that way. But as far I'm concerned the first 2 seasons aren't all that unrealistic. I can totally relate to the struggles of the trio to paying the bills and their failures in dating....things were more realistic in the first 2 seasons than people realize. Things seem more natural than later on. This "farce" doesn't seem all that far-fetched so far. These are working-class people with relatable struggles. It makes perfect sense that this show struck a chord with the public. |

I agree with you about the first 2 seasons. My favorites are seasons 1-3, mainly because of the Ropers.

Six episodes into season 3....already the show doesn't seem as good because I believe Nicholl Ross West hasn't written an episode thus far. I don't think George Burditt, another common Season 2 writer, has contributed yet either. Now they're starting to bring in other writers, and clearly the tone changes when different people are contributing to the scripts.

Yes, I agree JSP. The humor was a lot more conversational in the earlier seasons. I think a lot of that was due to the dumbing-down of Chrissy. In season 4, especially, we see more punchline humor and a LOT more time taken to explain things to Chrissy, which took away from the earlier rhythm of three competent people talking to each other.

season 3 is when I believe the show takes off and never looks back. You see more larry and the episodes are funnier from this point forward

I thought Season 3 really picked up in the last half. In fact, some of my favorite episodes are at the end of Season 3, particularly "The Best Laid Plans" and "The Bake-Off."

Having Larry appear more often is a good thing, but somehow the show doesn't seem as groundbreaking or shocking as it did the first 2 seasons. They're getting away from the sex jokes and they're not popping up as frequently. Now it's more about misunderstandings as I'm going through these Season 3 episodes. I don't know if anything is going to top these first 2 seasons. The show came through like a hurricane on the airwaves at the time and the impact can still be felt today. In Season 3 the sex humor is already being toned down. |

The one thing I didn't like about the earlier seasons is they displayed the Jack character as a gay guy since he 1. Had no male friends 2. Not going out with women It wasn't until the 3rd season when he becomes a little more manly and has a girlfriend........"Linda" and Male friend Larry |

Despite owning Season 2, I definitely prefer the mid/later seasons, in particular seasons 4 and 5. Mr Furley was a well needed injection of energy as The Ropers storyline's were always the same and dragged on a little.
