TiVo Inc., the Santa Clara company that makes digital video recorders, has introduced a new model that targets consumers who do not have cable television.

TiVo’s Roamio OTA is similar to its current model, but relies on a high-definition antenna instead of plugging into a cable connection. It will hit shelves Sept. 14 with a price tag of $49.99, a quarter the cost of the company’s flagship model.

"Many top TV shows in America are available with a simple HD antenna," said TiVo CMO Ira Bahr. "TiVo is devoted to making the best possible cable TV user experience available through our operator partners and in retail, but we recognize some viewers opt not to receive the benefits a subscription with a cable provider offers. TiVo Roamio OTA makes sure that they too can get a best in class DVR experience through an antenna, including our world renowned interface and industry defining recording capability at our most affordable price point ever.”

Though users of the new model won’t have to pay any subscription fee to a cable provider, they will have to pay $15 per month to TiVo and commit to no less than a year of its service.

News of the OTA model arrives with better-than-expected financial results from Tivo, whose subscriptions in the second quarter rose 33 percent from the same period a year ago.

TiVo on Tuesday announced earnings of 8 cents per share, a penny more than Wall Street’s expectation, along with a planned buyback of $350 million in stock.

There was something similar about 7 years ago? Not sure of exact year and we ordered one. It worked great for a short time and then they stopped selling them, reviews are horrible. I'm hopeful this product is better, I'd be interested in one. The shows we'd like to record would come on Me-TV when we move and are able to get that channel. Many come on too late at night or when we're working.

MY directv DVR has been recording OTA channels for years now. It was the greatest thing when I realized it.

I was gonna say you can use a VCR to record but I'm just remembering there is no way even with a RF coaxial cable.

For those with old 4.3 TV sets they would need to connect the digital converter box along with a seperate antenna to the back of a VCR, don't know if that'll work though.

You can buy it at Best Buy only and it is $50 for 500MB or 75 hours of shows. But the big no, no is that Tivo charges $15 a month for a two year contract. That $360 + $50 or $410. Totally out of reason; at least the way I see it! For that amount; I just buy a HDTV theater computer and get a 6TB Hard Drive. It will record around 900 hours of programming; DVDs, etc... and you can get anything..... surf the internet - Youtube, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, foreign broadcast, etc...

IMHO; a big rip off of the consumer!

I may have to switch satellite providers if this is the case.
