Redd Foxx missing from a few episodes - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I remember that Redd Foxx was missing from a few episodes during the 2nd or 3rd season of Sanford and Son, and Grady was taking care of LaMont. Can anyone tell me why this was?

I think this was going into the 5th year of the show. I do know that it involved a salary dispute where Redd felt he was underpaid by NBC. The writers made it as Fred returned to St. Louis for an extended visit. HIs return show was a classic but after this the show was never as funny as the earlier years.

I liked Grady's character and all, but I'm so glad that Redd Foxx decided to come back. I just didn't see it going on if Redd didn't come back.
