Many series associate hootie with owls. IIRC, that is south east rural, and even Ens. Parker teased Capt. Binghamton about a "who who who-tie owl" {McHale's Navy, late season one, "The Hillbillies of the 73"**.
"Hooters" probably became disparaging with the nightspot, wherever it may be, in about the late 1980s. |

This reminds me of something. A few years ago a long time resident of the town that I live in, upset with the direction that the town has taken, posted a sign along the highway, right by the entrance of town. The sign said "Welcome to Hooterville."
