Fred Suffered From Stagefright - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Anyone notice that throughout the show's run Fred suffered from stage fright? In the Hollyrock episode, he couldn't speak and when he went on The Price is Priced, he chickened out and Barney took his place.

Feel free to mention other incidents where Fred chickened out.

Yes!!!! Bless his heart!! The lovable loudmouth, Fred was very out going and outspoken among his wife and friends, but he had a shy side!!!

He also was nervous around his boss, Mr. Slate!

he would always say, BUT, BUT, BUT Mr. Slate!!!!

This is one of a number of characteristics that Fred shares in common with Ralph Kramden! That's not surprising since many people believe the Flinstones was based on The Hooneymooners

it WAS based on THE HONEYMOONERS. In fact Jackie Gleason wanted to sue Hanna-Barbera but his lawyer talked him out of it.

Fred had that same rolling laugh as Jackie too. Alan Reed was perfect for voicing Fred.

In "The Twitch" (Season 3 and maybe the first time the credits veered away from the sister studio (Through Columbia Studios) Screen Gems's fonts that they later used on "Gidget" and "I Dream of Jeannie" to the Hanna-Barbera fonts used through the late 1970s. Barney has to resort to a trick that even Walt Disney's Dumbo's own buddy Timothy Mouse used on Dumbo during HIS circus stage fright-stab him with a pin..

Then there was the final episode made but the next to last broadcast, "My Fair Freddy" which also saw The Gazoo off (though Barney wasn't around at the end to see that happen) when Gazoo with (by demand of the guys) without magic gets out a dress/leotards ballerina outfit that (thanks to their peering into the garage against Wilma's request!) Joe Rockhead (Al Melvin, rather than John Stephenson as usual) and the rest of the Water Buffalo Lodge members then (with FRED saying "I just hope that NOBODY sees me in this silly (ballerina) once Fred opens the door and gets a chance to see all of THEM, start laughing at Fred, causing him to metamoprhoicaly shrink mouse sized (that old Flintstones gag--it orginated in a Warner Merrie Melodie in 1941 "Goofy Groceries" when Superman meets King Kong and becomes a baby!)! He then runs in the bushes and returns to his normal size..(NO Gazoo help there..). (The Flintstones itself had used that "mental shrinking from embarassment" bit in Season 2's "The Masquerade Party" when Fred realizies who he'd been talking to in that parrot mask when Slate lets him in and most famously in Season 1's "The Drive In", the "Irving and Charlie-Live Wire" carhops at the end when Wilma and Betty take their place, and Fred AND Barney shrink from being musically "belitted" and comment to one another "sure makes a man feel small, doesn't it"!

Fred Flintstone type LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

In Romeorock and Julietstone Fred knew all the dialogue but when he had to perform in front of an audience he got the jitters. As the Frogmouth in Hollyrock The Prizes Price he did not appear Barney explained that Fred chickened out
