While watching DTM I'm am amazed at how long Joseph Kearns has been gone. Before JFK was killed.... Now thats a long time ago.... Stands the test of time although sure wish there were some color episodes.....http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg...e=gr&GRid=5434

When I was a kid in the '60's I used to watch Dennis every day as repeats, I used to think that I'm around Dennis' age (he's actually older, but a kid watching repeats doesn't realize that). I thought one day I'll be as old as Dennis's father but that I'd never get to be as old as Mr. Wilson. Now I realize that I'm already a year older than Mr. Wilson was when he died. Wow, time really flies and I realize how young Joe Kearns was when he died. A real shame, he was so talented. He and his interactions with Dennis was the best part of that show. You could just see the workings in Mr. Wilson's brain as he thought of schemes to get rid of Dennis. He was great.

Mr. Wilson was great! George Wilson. When the other Mr. Wilson was cast as his brother (Gale Gordon) just wasn't the same! And wow, I suppose I am about Joe kearns age at his death or close to it! Being I am a women, I haven't started wearing my pants up high though!

Things weren't the same when John Wilson took over. Probably because he didn't wear his pants above his belly. I'm watching 4th season again now, seems the relationship between John Wilson and Dennis is pretty good, but it definitely seems the relationship between Henry & Alice Mitchell is definitely changed. More contentious, with Henry openly getting angry at John and speaking angrily at John. Not to mention always calling John Wilson "John" not "Mr. Wilson" the way he always referred to George. Seems the respect was gone with Henry when it came to George's brother. I like Gale Gordon a lot, love him as Mr. Mooney and as Mr. Conklin on Our Miss Brooks. But even the relationship between Dennis and John seems forced at times. Like I said, the show just wasn't the same anymore without George. I still like it, I still watch season 4, but I always look forward to the return of George Wilson. Wish we could do that in real life, come back again.

I also missed Martha in the later episodes. She was a sweet older lady. She and George made a great couple. George and Martha Wilson, like George and Martha Washington! , John Wilson's wife Eloise just wasn't as warm and grandmotherly like Martha!

Yes, Martha & George did seem like a real married couple who've been together for a long time. They still showed each other affection but still got annoyed with each other at times. It seemed real. I used to think that too when I was a kid, George & Martha just like Washington. John & Eloise seemed more like a comic couple, they were funny together but they didn't seem like a real couple to me. Eloise seemed to either flip from being very attentive and caring of John to being openly hostile and very angry at him.
But despite the shortcomings of season 4, some things were better, Seymour comes more into his own and has a real personality now as opposed to just a cute little kid who says little. Tommy & Dennis by now seem like real friends who work together well. Even Dennis and his "parents" seem more like a real family now. One major thing that has bothered me about Season 4 though is Dennis and his change in personality. He used to be more an innocent who might cause trouble but didn't mean it. The Season 4 Dennis in some episodes deliberately tries to sabotage John Wilson and seems meaner and at times like a maniacal spoiled brat who must have his way or else. He even gives ultimatums to Mr. Wilson and his parents & worse there seems to be a threat behind them. No, I don't like the new aggressive overbearing mean spirited Dennis in Season 4. That sweet kid is gone.

Gale Gordon has a lot of laugh-out-loud moments in season four. Honestly, the character I missed the most in those episodes was Martha. I always thought it was sad to see how marginalized she was at the end of the third season, then shuttled off unceremoniously for that season's finale. |
