When Gary tells Rhoda at the Costume Shop he wants her to go shopping for underwear for him:

Rhoda: He wants me to buy his underpants!
Ramon: How much does he want for them?

That is why his presence was missed in Season 5. Along with Gary, and hell even Johnny Venture was missed if you ask me. They gutted a lot of cast members we got to know.

The biggest difference in the show's dip in quality between Season 4 and 5 was that Alan Katz and Don Reo were involved in the show in Season 4 but not in Season 5. They came up with the best Season 4 scripts and when they were gone it was all over.
