What is local television like where you live?
Anything unusual that one cant find anywhere else? What local shows do you remember watching growing up? Ever had the chance to watch someone on local tv BEFORE they hit it big? I used to live in the Northern Virginia area and I still have tapes of Oprah Winfrey ( doing Dialing for Dollars ) and Maury Povich hosting a show called "Panarama" on DC's channel 5 back in the 70s. Really its not that much different that the current Maury show. I remember Captain 20 and the Count Gore DuGohl I know I mispelled that ) on channel 20 out of Washington. I always thought Baltimore had better channels/local shows. They had Captain Chessapeake, Professor Kool, Bowling for Dollars ( I read that the set is still intact at WBAL-TV though they havent used it in years ), Until the 70s Baltimore even used a puppet to do the nightly weather ( JP ), then you had the Bill Lefever and the One O'clock movie on channel 45, kind of like Boston's Movie Loft where you actually had a "host" to tell you about the movie. I always enjoy watching local tv when I go on vacation. From Toronto's City TV to the Fox station I watched in West Virginia airing high school wrestling ( just before the Simpsons ) to Denver's Blinky's Fun Club on their channel 2. Some local tv is so bad that its actually good. |

Local TV where I live is awful. That's why I got a satellite. Now I only watch local TV every once in a while for local news.

I live in Boston, and I'm trying to think of our local claims to fame:
Matt Lauer of "Today" used to host a show here called "Talk of the Town". Bill O'Reilly of Fox News used to be a news anchor on the CBS (now NBC) affiliate. CNN's Paula Zahn was a news anchor at the same station around the same time. Keith Olbermann (of ESPN, MSNBC, and Fox Sports) was once the weekend sports anchor of our ABC affiliate. Barry Nolan, the longtime anchor of "Hard Copy" hosted the local version of "Evening Magazine" here for years. "Hollywood Squares" host Tom Bergeron hosted the local version of "People Are Talking" here for quite a while. The local kids shows here were "Captain Bob" (a guy dressed up as an old sailor did painting on TV), and "Zoom", which eventually went national on PBS and was revived a few years ago. |

Oh, I almost forgot: our ABC affiliate, which was very dedicated to local programming before it got bought by Hearst, actually produced a LOCAL sitcom in 1979 called "Park Street Under", set in a Boston tavern where a waitress and the manager carried on an affair. Didn't last long, but the creators sued the producers of "Cheers" when that show became a big hit, and got a quiet settlement.

I think he did some...only DC area teenage girls though. But not nearly as much as he does now. Wonder why he is so stuck on this subject hummmmmm. Kind of like the old Donahue show. Everytime I would turn on the catch PHil it was always gay/lesbian related.
Maury also did the 10:00 "Metromedia News" on 5 too til I believe 1984. Always had a strange smile even during the most saddest stories. I have a clip of 5'snewscast from I think 1974 with Povich and he hasnt change, looks wise not one bit. There is an urban legend about Oprah when she was at Baltimore's channel 13 not sure if it true but from I recall channel 13 didnt like her hair, sent Oprah to some expensive salon in New York to give her a make over. Only to have Oprah loose all of her hair . That may explain why many photos of the early Baltimore days of Oprah Winfrey had her wearing a scarf or hat. |

Local TV around here is only good if you like high school or college sports (which I don't).

We have the local cable channel- which advertises real estate, etc
we have the bernardsville hs channel- if you wanna know about pto meetings, this is good, otherwise its just a waste yeah all of the local affilates are in NYC, so we get news for LI, Connecticut, NYC, NYstate and NJ all in one. It's kind of a pain in the butt. oh well though ------------------ ....MeG +yo' mama so fat, the last time she saw 90210 was on the bathroom scale!+ |
