I continue my personal tribute to Bob Larbey with this:
Get Some In! A light hearted, fun comedy, with a touch of reality, about young men joining the RAF National Service, staring Tony Selby, David Janson, Brian Pettifer, Robert Lindsay, and Gerard Ryder. John Esmonde and Bob Larbey. Young men, many of whom are leaving home for the first time to take basic training in the military, is a natural source of humor. This series set in 1955 is about exactly that. As I followed these new RAF recruits and witnessed their weaknesses and strengths I got many laughs at their expense, but also attained a fondness for especially two of the main four. The four of them were actually quite charming young men, and you soon begin to stop thinking of them as spoiled brats and begin to take their side. Very often TV writers make career military personnel out to be fouls. And this one, I'm sorry to say, is no different. But, Tony Selby is very easy to dislike as he plays the cruel, opportunistic, and unforgiving Drill Instructor. His character, more than the rigors of training, provided the conflict usually needed for comedy. I will say that I enjoyed this show and that each episode seemed to just fly by as it moved swiftly with continuity. But, I will also say that Season Four was much better than the others, and they could have just ended it there. But, that's just me. I miss not being able to start up a new episode so, I will most likely watch this show again after some time. This is simply my way of paying tribute to a fine British Comedy writer. It has turned out to be a fine and enjoyable hobby. |
