One week after the US upfronts, it is now time for the Canadian networks to strut their stuff and announce their new shows and schedules for Sept. 2014. The first official day to make presentations was yesterday but CBC jumped the gun and announced their lineup last week on May 29. So today, in the first of many in a series of previews for fall 2014 in Canadian TV, we will look first at CBC:
CBC The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation will again feature all-Canadian non-import programming this season with the exception of Sundays at 5 when they will show Disney movies. On Saturdays, Hockey Night In Canada will be back as usual but with a new host:George Stromboloupoulus, who gives up his long-running talk show to take over the job that was held for over 20 years by Ron MacLean, who in turn will leave the popular but now cancelled reality series "Battle Of The Blades" to host a new Sunday national edition of HNIC called "Hometown Hockey" for CITY-TV and Rogers Broadcasting. I'll have a lot more about this later this summer after the new NHL schedule is announced. As for regular programming, like the other major Canadian networks, CBC plans to go light on comedies and heavy on dramas. The only new sitcom that was announced will not air until midseason. It will be called---wait for it---"Schitt's Creek". The show will star SCTV alumni Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy as husband and wife with Eugene's son Dan Levy playing one of their sons and also acting as co-producer with Dad. Full details on the new CBC schedule can be found in the links below. Fall 2014 Schedule Press Release Upfront Package CITY CITY-TV is the largest network that is owned by Rogers and will become the main beneficiary of their new 12 year NHL deal, as Sunday nights will become a new home for NHL hockey beginning Oct. 5. This will set up a new battleground for Canadian audiences as they will now have to choose between NHL hockey on CITY and NFL football on NBC and TSN. CITY will also have Saturday games added to their lineup for good measure. The rest of the week will feature one new sitcom, "Black-Ish", from ABC Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT; one new drama "Scorpion", Mondays at 9 p.m; and one new reality series Utopia Tuesdays at 8 p.m & Fridays at 9 p.m. In short, a little of everything and a lot of hockey! Sounds like a winning formula to me! Returning sitcoms: "2 Broke Girls", "Mom", "New Girl", "The Mindy Project", "Modern Family", and "The Middle". "2 Broke Girls" will also be featured daily in syndicated reruns for the first time weekdays at 10 pm followed by "Two and a Half Men". Press Release Fall Preview + Schedule Tomorrow: Global and CTV |

GLOBAL
Global has made a lot of changes to their lineup for 2014, loading up with 8 new dramas, including the latest NCIS series, "NCIS:New Orleans", and promising new series "Stalker", "Gracepoint", "Constantine", and "Madam Secretary". As well, the new Heroes sequel "Heroes Reborn" will be reborn in mid-season. The comedy lineup figures to be more interesting. Having struck out badly with "Sean Saves The World" and "The Michael J Fox Show" last year, Global looks for better things from 2014 newcomers "About A Boy", "Marry Me", and "Mulaney", which will anchor their new Sunday lineup. That's where Global is taking their biggest gamble. Hoping to draw mainly female audiences and draw viewers away from football and hockey, Global leads off with "Mulaney" at 7 pm and "Bob's Burgers" at 7:30. At this point, this is where they would usually simulcast the entire Fox animation block and run with it.This year will be different as "Madam Secretary" takes over "The Simpsons" normal 8 pm slot and it will be followed by "The Good Wife" at 9 pm. Then at 10 pm, both "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" take over, 2 hours later than FOX. That's a huge risk for them to take! If it fails, they can look towards mid-season to fill in the holes with new series "State Of Affairs", "Elementary", "Bad Teacher" (an early favourite to make an early exit) and "A To Z", the one new sitcom that I am personally looking forward to watching. New sitcoms: (Sept.) About A Boy, Marry Me, Mulaney; (Midseason) Bad Teacher, A To Z Returning sitcoms: The Simpsons, Family Guy Fall 2014 Schedule Press Release Upfront Package - Includes complete fall lineups for all Shaw Media specialty channels CTV/CTV TWO CTV is Canada's #1 network and this season they'll look to widen the gap over the competition with a new schedule that emphasizes "power" in all areas up and down their lineup. This is most evident in their new acquisitions which take on a superhero theme. Among the new dramas coming to CTV are the highly anticipated series "Gotham", "The Flash", and "Arrow" all set to lead off the primetime lineups at 8 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays respectively. As impressive as this sounds, CTV's biggest strength lies in their returning series. "The Big Bang Theory" remains the #1 comedy series in Canada by a wide margin over "Two and a Half Men" which CTV will move to a new time, Thursdays at 9 pm, during its final season. Thursday nights look to be even stronger this season as CTV stole "The Millers" from Global to place at 8:30 after "The Big Bang Theory" and before "Two And A Half Men". At 9:30, they believe they have another winner as "The McCarthys" will look to round out a new and stronger comedy block. Saturdays will be another night that will be rich with comedy as (surprise!) "The Big Bang Theory" will lead off at 8 followed by "Anger Management" and "Mike & Molly". All 3 series will also be featured prominently on CTV Two in daily reruns. "Anger Management" and "Mike & Molly" will run each night except Saturdays at 10 and 10:30 pm. The one other significant addition to CTV Two will be the new drama "The Mysteries Of Laura" Wednesdays at 8:00 pm. In the daytime, CTV will feature a Sunday afternoon NFL doubleheader with games at 1 and 4 pm with Bell Media sister station TSN expected to take the Sunday, Monday and Thursday night games. For those who love syndicated sitcom reruns in the afternoon, CTV will introduce "Hot In Cleveland" weekdays at 5 and 5:30 pm. It looks like CTV could be in for another strong season at #1! New sitcoms: The Millers, The McCarthys, The Odd Couple (midseason) Returning sitcoms: The Big Bang Theory, Two & A Half Men, The Goldbergs, Anger Management, Mike & Molly, Hot In Cleveland New Series CTV Fall 2014 Schedule CTV Two Fall 2014 Schedule Press Release Press Release 2 - CTV Powers Up Next week: The specialty channels |

Once I get the official schedules posted, I will have full details about what the various Canadian specialty channels will have in store for this fall. If this latest bit of news from CTS is any indication of what to expect, I think I might turn seriously ill. Read it and weep, folks!

More news (all bad!) about the new-look CTS for this fall. Not only will the station get a new look, it will also have a new name. In September, it will be (ugh!) re-branded and become known as Yes TV. This is not to be confused with YES TV, the New York Yankees network. The Canadian Yes TV won't have any sports but will instead rely heavily on reality shows (double ugh!) and syndicated content during the evening primetime hours. The full schedule has not been announced yet but for now the early evening hours will look like this: 6:30 Judge Judy (replaces "The Cosby Show") 7:00 Wheel Of Fortune (replaces "Gilmore Girls") 7:30 Jeopardy 8:00 (Tue/Thu) X Factor UK (Thu) The Biggest Loser (both will replace "The West Wing") TBA America's Funniest Home Videos (October) TBA American Idol (Jan. 2015) So there you go. You have been warned. Blog news item: CTS Re-Branding YesTV.com - New website |

I keep hoping that some channel on "regular" cable is going to start airing older shows that I've never seen but heard good things about, or older shows that I have seen and loved as a kid.
I've heard that "Vision TV" will be airing "Marcus Welby M.D." starting in September, and dropping "The Waltons." |

At least there's still hockey on Saturday nights, I do get City-TV, so I'll get the Sunday night games. Do you know if TSN is still airing hockey during the week?

Now for a little double ho-hum or why Canada really needs a good "Retro TV" channel. Canada's other classic TV specialty channel is DejaView and they have done exactly what Comedy Gold did with their fall lineup. They plan to add 1 new series to their schedule this fall but otherwise everything else is almost exactly the same as it is now. Look at this for confirmation: DejaView - Spring 2014 DejaView - Summer 2014 DejaView - Fall 2014 - Effective Sept. 1 Isn't that awful?? I'm just sick about it! In Canada we have only 2 retro channels (DejaView and Comedy Gold) that show the same handful of shows, plus by law a few Canadian series, in heavy rotation---and you don't always get every season of the shows that are there. It's enough to make me turn off TV altogether, except that I don't want to miss my favourite sports, which happens to be one area that Canadian TV excels in. (See next reply below.) To give you an idea of how bleak this looks, here is a breakdown of the sitcoms that both stations combined will show this fall by decade: 1950s - I Love Lucy (Comedy Gold) That's it!! 1960s - None That's right, nothing!! 1970s - Comedy Gold: 3 - Mary Tyler Moore, Rhoda, Bob Newhart Show DejaView: 4 - All In The Family, Jeffersons, Three's Company, MASH Total: 7 1980s - Comedy Gold: 5 - Newhart, Full House, Who's The Boss?, Growing Pains, Night Court DejaView: 4 - Roseanne, Golden Girls, Major Dad, Archie Bunker's Place Total: 9 1990s: Total: 2 - 1 show each: Wings (Comedy Gold), and Everybody Loves Raymond (DejaView) And there you have it. Canada's answer to Antenna TV and ME-TV. It's very sad indeed! Note that the start date for the new season is Mon. Sept. 1. That's two and a half weeks away. I'll have more news regarding the specialty channels soon. |

Yes they are but it will be a regional package comprising of mainly midweek games featuring 3 of the 7 Canadian teams: Toronto, Winnipeg, and Ottawa. The others, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, will be carried exclusively by Sportsnet. The Montreal regional package was not renewed by TSN and won't be picked up by either channel, at least not for now. All 82 games will still be seen in French only on TVA (22 games) and RDS (60). NHL on TSN 2014-15 coverage That's what TSN has been left with after Rogers won the national TV rights to NHL games this year. Still, you had a feeling that they would not take this large setback lying down. On Monday, TSN fired back with a bombshell of their own: Starting on Monday August 25, coinciding with the first day of the US Open Tennis Championship, TSN will expand their channel lineup from 2 to 5 channels - TSN1, TSN2, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5. Basically, if you can't find your favourite sport or sports team on one channel, try one of the other 4. It's the same idea that Sportsnet has with their channels: Sportsnet Ontario, East, West, Pacific, One, and 360. So for now, you won't really need to spend big bucks on fancy packages like NHL Center Ice, NFL Sunday Ticket, or MLB Extra Innings, because the chances are good that the game you want to see that night will be on one of the TSN or Sportsnet feeds. The 5 new channels will be arranged in this fashion: TSN1 - Regional TSN feed for British Columbia and Yukon TSN2 - The main network feed, plus regional coverage of Toronto Raptors (NBA) games. All national broadcasts will be simulcast on the other 4 channels. TSN3 - Regional feed for Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, which will carry 60 Winnipeg Jets games. TSN4 - Regional feed for most of Ontario which will have 26 Toronto Maple Leafs games. TSN5 - Regional feed for Eastern Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. It will have 60 Ottawa Senators games as well as English-language Montreal Canadiens games if they can agree on the rights. TSN expands to 5 new channels Sorry if this is a little confusing for now, but it will all make sense by the fall and it will all be very worthwhile. Like I said above, the best thing about watching TV in Canada is the sports coverage we are soon about to get, especially hockey. You can't beat it anywhere! |

Do you know if any Canadian station will air "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" this fall? CHCH had it last year but for some reason only aired it once a week. If they're dropping "Wheel" and "Jeopardy", the odds don't look good of them keeping this one. I was hoping their "Spin-off" game show would do well - it wasn't bad.

It doesn't look like that will happen. I have checked and I found that the only station so far that will carry it in Canada will be Peachtree TV in Atlanta. This fall, CHCH will be replacing the popular game shows with "Square Off" at 7 pm, a news program featuring plenty of one on one debates, and "Access Hollywood" at 7:30. The primetime hours will feature movies 4 days a week, "Bones", "CSI: Miami", and "Burn Notice" on Wednesdays, and an interesting Friday group that will look like this: 8pm - Last Man Standing 8:30pm - Cristela 9pm - The Simpsons 9:30pm - The Simpsons 10pm - 20/20 I don't expect that to last very long. Full details can be found below: CHCH Fall 2014 Schedule Quote by KatieAnn: I keep hoping that some channel on "regular" cable is going to start airing older shows that I've never seen but heard good things about, or older shows that I have seen and loved as a kid. I've heard that "Vision TV" will be airing "Marcus Welby M.D." starting in September, and dropping "The Waltons." I keep hoping for the same thing but I always end up disappointed! About Vision TV: Yes, you heard right. "Marcus Welby M.D." will be on Vision this fall as will "McMillan and Wife". Also returning will be "Sue Thomas F B Eye" and "Murder She Wrote". Along with Vision, CTS was also showing "The Waltons" but they too will be dropping it, which is a real double whammy for the show's fans. The Ontario station will definitely drop it. The Alberta channels will keep it for at least 2 more weeks. CTS will officially re-brand as Yes TV on Sept. 1 but their new prime time schedule won't take effect until Sept. 15 when both "Wheel Of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" will begin their new seasons. Until then, the schedules for all 3 Yes TV stations will look a little strange, but they will only be temporary (I hope!). Here are the highlights of some of the key series to watch for: Primetime schedule as of Sept. 15: 6:30 Judge Judy 7:00 Wheel Of Fortune 7:30 Jeopardy 8:00 (Tue/Thu) X Factor UK (Thu) The Biggest Loser TBA America's Funniest Home Videos (October) TBA American Idol (Jan. 2015) Yes TV Ontario - Sept 1-14 3:00 Popcorn TV 3:30 Family Ties 4:00 Dr Quinn Medicine Woman 5:00 Family Feud 5:30 Family Feud 6:00 Full House 6:30 Popcorn TV 7:00 Everybody Loves Raymond 7:30 Everybody Loves Raymond 1:00 AM The Beverly Hillbillies 2:00 AM The Lucy Show 5:00 AM The Andy Griffith Show ( I REALLY hope this doesn't last!) Yes TV Edmonton & Calgary 2:00 Family Feud 2:30 Family Feud 5:00 Popcorn TV 5:30 Family Ties 6:00 Dr Quinn Medicine Woman 7:00 The Waltons 8:00 Full House 10:00 Everybody Loves Raymond 10:30 Everybody Loves Raymond 11:00 Family Feud 11:30 Family Feud 3:30 AM The Beverly Hillbillies 4:00 AM The Lucy Show 5:30 AM The Andy Griffith Show I'll be looking forward to seeing "Family Ties" on TV again and keeping my PVR busy for the early morning hours but otherwise it's nothing special and it will only get worse. |
