Default Owls and Gophers

Eddie called girls who were less than pretty an owl or a gopher. Who did he actually call a gopher and name the episode.

Jill Bartlett, although she turned out not to be a gopher or wet blanket. According to Wally, she's "kind of pretty and a real good dancer too." Nice ending. I hope when kids watch they learn the lesson from Blind Date Committee.

Can you believe of all the things Wally could ask (to "get a line on her") he asks Mrs. Bartlett how much Jill weighs? And then asks if Jill likes guys heavier or lighter than herself? Whoa. What high school girl would say lighter?

So if Ward thought Maude Hageman was a wet blanket, who did he think "looked a little like Susan Hayward"?

Ward thought Jackie's mother looked like Susan Hayward in Beaver's Old Buddy. Can't think of his last name without watching the episode. Oh I know Waters.

When Beaver gets a letter from a modeling company (Beaver The Model) about being the next big star and wanting to post his picture in Hollywood directories what movie star photo does Ward think Beaver sent in?

Yes, Mrs. Waters looks like Susan Hayward. Her first name is never given.

In keeping with the gopher and movie star theme...
1. In what episode is a real animal gopher mentioned?
2. What movie star does Beaver name when he is trying to get Lumpy to confess? Hint: Hugh Beaumont shook hands with this movie star at the end of a film they were in.

1. I think it's Beaver and Henry when they hope to catch the gopher eating the flowers.

2. I'll guess Jimmy Stewart. Later Beaver mentions Jimmy Stewart in another movie when he's trying to make Wally feel better in that one when Cindy Andrews is knitting Eddie a sweater.

Gophers and Jimmy Stewart x2!

You answered the gopher in Beaver and Henry, while I was thinking of Wally and Beaver with the shovel going to look for the gopher in "School Sweater". I forgot about the gopher trap.

Beaver tries to get Lumpy to confess he started the towel fight in "Wally's Track Meet" and uses Jimmy Stewart in the movie as an example. I recall Stewart was referenced in another episode, but didn't remember the one. Thanks for letting me know it's "Eddie's Sweater".

Beaumont shakes Stewart's hand at the end of "Night Passage" (1957). This was his last movie before starting Leave it to Beaver.
