Default Carlton, Your Doorman

Hi,

I'm fairly new. Or rather a long time between posts, that is.

I hope that if they ever release the Season 5 DVDs they put "Carlton, Your Doorman" on it as an extra, but that's probably wishful thinking.

I heard that the Carlton Your Doorman animated special was actually a pilot for a weekly series that never materialized. If Carlton Your Doorman was intended to be a weekly series, when would it have aired, Saturday Morning or Primetime?

"Stay Safe"? More like "Stay Sad".

No idea, but I can't picture anything from MTM airing on Saturday mornings. Wouldn't be their style. Then again, I never saw Carlton so I don't know if the pilot is or is not the usual sophisticated fare from MTM.

If it had been ordered to series before, say, the 1980-81 season or the 1981-82 season, would Carlton Your Doorman have been a long-running hit, or would it have been a short-running (one-season) flop? Being an animated series, it would have had some sore of complications, like the long production time needed for one episode, etc..

I don't think it would have been a hit. I don't think it was right time then to have a cartoon on during primetime.

Primetime. The pilot used to be on YouTube and I recall there being a cuss word or two in there.

I guess this means an actual Carlton Your Doorman animated series would have either been a flop, or wouldn't have been picked up to series at all. The Big 3 networks would never have accepted animated series as long-term players. But the Fox Network, a fourth television network, did, with the immense success of The Simpsons and a few other long-running animated shows, such as King of the Hill and Family Guy.

Even though Carlton Your Doorman didn't become a series, Lorenzo Music not long after became the cartoon voice of Garfield for tv specials & Saturday morning series for years. His voice was a great match, I think, for Garfield as well as for Carlton.

For some reason, I recall reading that "Carlton.." was supposed to air right after the sitcom "Checking In", which was the Marla Gibbs spin-off from 'The Jeffersons'. However, 'Carlton' never got a chance because "Checking In" was cancelled so quickly. Does anyone else remember this?
