The last full album I listened to is "Sierra", country/rock 1977 LP release on Mercury Records.
Supposedly, this is really a Flying Burrito Brothers album, but for whatever reason the group changed their name to Sierra for this album. Maybe they chose the Sierra name in attempt to compare themselves to The Eagles who were gaining in popularity during that time. A few songs on the Sierra album sound like songs The Eagles could have recorded during their 70's heyday. "Sierra" is a very tuneful album, full of good songs and catchy melodies, in my opinion it's better than anything that they released under the Burrito's name. But the album got zero promotion and wasn't a retail success. The only reason I discovered the album is because I was shopping at a record store one day back in 1977 and saw the album in one of the record bins, I liked the artwork on the album cover and thought maybe the music would be good too, so I bought the album and sure enough I wasn't disappointed. One of the singers in the band, Bobby Cochran, sounds a little bit like Kevin Cronin from REO Speedwagon. As far as I know, the Sierra album hasn't been re-issued on CD, it's lone release is the 1977 vinyl LP and is long out of print. It's getting harder to find but the last time I checked there were a few copies for sale on ebay. |

Eve and Turn Of A Friendly Card are OK, Eye In The Sky is in my opinion their best album. Ammonia Avenue, Vulture Culture, Stereotomy, Gaudi, all of those are good too. |

Today I listened to a very good melodic hard rock album, name of the band is Hero, name of the album is Boys Will Be Boys. 1978 LP release on 20th Century Records.
"Somebody's Calling" and "One More Time" are the best songs on the album, but the other tracks are strong too, maybe one or two that are on the weaker side but that's it. This album should have received more attention, but with disco and the Bee Gees ruling the charts in the late 1970's, hard rock albums like this from new bands trying to make a name for themselves were often overlooked and didn't have much of a chance. Boys Will Be Boys was Hero's 2nd and final album, their 1st album was released the year before in 1977 on the Mercury label, but the 2nd album is better than the 1st one. Hero's lead vocalist, Scott Phares, sounds a little bit like Freddie Mercury from Queen. Hero's lead guitarist, Neil Citron, went on to become a fairly well known guitar player. |
