Default Blank Tapes

Can someone please help me understand the difference between SLP and SP time for blank tapes?I was watching my Charlie's Angels/Mannix/Diff'rent Strokes/Three's Company tape today and it cut off towards the beginning of the first DS ep.I mean it just went off as if it was the last thing on the tape.On the back of the box it says if you set the tape to record for SP time it will only record 2 hr and that's what I've been setting.I just picked any old one.So if I put SLP I get more time? They also have a thing in the chart that says EP.But when I timer record EP isn't listed and "EP" is what makes the tape six hours!

SLP and EP are the same thing. To get the most out of a tape you record with SLP/EP

SP doesnt give you as much recording time but you will get the best quality if you record in SP. If you had a 6 hour tape you'd only get two hours out of it if you recorded in SP.

SP gives you 2 hours of taping time, and SLP or EP (same thing) gives you six hours.

Some VCRs also have an LP setting which will give you 4 hours. (on a 6 hour SLP/EP tape).

My old VCR had an LP setting, but my new one doesn't. I miss LP.

My new one was the only one they had that still had the LP function (Panasonic). I record almost everything that way.

Over here there is no ELP. A normal tape has SP which is 3 hours or LP which makes it 6.

I have always thought that SP stands for short play,
LP=long play and
SLP=super long play (or EP=extended play).

I don't know if this is actually true or not but it helps me remember.

Yes, Bootsy is right but tootieismyfav and dawsongirl are also right. On a typical tape SP=2hrs, LP=4hrs, SLP/EP=6hrs. Hope that clears it up for you.

Talking Remember:

If you plan on keeping what you are taping, always record in SP. At least, I always do. Quality is better than quantity!

However, if you do so, you will obviously need more tapes. I learned that -- I have all 66 episodes of "Veronica's Closet" on video in SP, as well as some "Just Shoot Mes," "Will & Graces," "Cybills," and "Golden Girls" and let me tell ya -- it's a LOT of tapes!

Personally I've never noticed much difference in picture quality between stuff I've recorded in SP and stuff I've recorded in LP. In fact, all my tapes - even the ones I plan on keeping - are recorded in LP. I can get 5 movies on a 4hour tape if I use LP.

I've never recorded anything in LP so I don't know what it's like, but I've noticed a huge difference in quality between SP and SLP/EP.

I record everything is SLP. I have no choice. If I recorded in SP, I wouldn't be able to AFFORD all my tapes... I have about 80 tapes with the full six hours used on them, and I get more every few weeks. I'm a tape junkie.

Me either. The only time I notice anything bad is in transfering/copying.
