Warner Archive brings back all of the laughs (as well of the drama) of life in a large family with Eight is Enough - The Complete Fifth Season. The six disc set contains all 22 episodes of the fifth (and final) season of the series that follows the oversized Bradford family, headed by father Tom (Dick Van Patten) and step-mother Abby (Betty Buckley). In the fifth season, the family gets even larger than eight as Susan has a baby, and then Abby's nephew Jeremy (Ralph Macchio, in his first TV role) comes in to the Bradford home. But if you think eight (or even ten) is enough, think again...there's more going on with this family than a growing size in this season, such as new careers, marriages possibly falling apart, and more!

Probably my most favourite season - the storylines just generally seem more solid and the script writers seem better. No more "slow" episodes.
My only fault is the first 2-parter episode has way too many flashbacks - some flashbacks are from the exact same episode too - totally unnecessary, unless back in the day it was used as a sort of "recap". Looking forward to the reunion movies in '87 and '89 getting a Warner MOD release.

This is probably my least favorite season as I think the "kids" were getting a bit too old. I also didn't like the background music - it was definitely different than in previous seasons. But I still really enjoyed season 5 and they had some very strong episodes with the birth of Susan's baby being my favorite.

There was a musicians' strike in late 1980 that also affected "The Waltons" and "Dallas" (also produced by Lorimar, who produced EIE). All three shows had to rely on stock background music for the first part of the season. But by the last half of the season things were back to normal.
