Warner Bros., Will Ferrell Team On ‘Flintstones’ Movie

Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble are being revived, with Warner Bros. launching development of an animated “Flintstones” movie based on the iconic TV series.

The studio has hired Chris Henchy, partner with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay at Gary Sanchez Prods., to write a script for the project. Ferrell and McKay are exec producing.

“The Flintstones,” created by Hanna-Barbera, imitated and spoofed Jackie Gleason’s “The Honeymooners.” Fred and Wilma Flintstone were touted in the theme song as “the modern Stone Age family.”

The show, which ran from 1960-66, was the first animated effort ever nominated for a primetime Emmy for comedy series.

Universal made a live-action movie in 1994 with John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis and Rosie O’Donnell. Warner Bros. acquired the rights to “The Flintstones” as part of Time Warner’s acquisition of Turner Broadcasting in 1996.

“Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane agreed in 2011 to exec produce a new “The Flintstones” TV series, produced by Fox Television and Warner Bros. for airing in 2013, but that project was delayed.

Warner Bros. has been ramping up its animation activity over the past year and a half through the creation of the Warner Animation Group, which saw major success this year with “The Lego Movie.”
