Default The girls' hairstyles at Eastland

So in seasons 2-4, is anyone else bothered by the lack of hairstyle changes with the girls?

Now Tootie is exempt from this, because she had three different hairstyles within those there seasons; except, unfortunately, she went too from the cute "top knot" style in season three to that god-awful bowl cut that lasted through the rest of season three and all of season four. UGH...that was not attractive on her! I can't believe they didn't try another style during all that time she had it.

My favorite Tootie hairstyle was definitely the "top knot" that she had in episodes like "Dear Me", and that is in my avatar. I thought it was so cute on her, and the bowl was a horrible look for her.

Now Blair always had that cascading blonde waterfall of golden tresses, so her hairstyle not changing doesn't really bother me.

But Natalie and Jo, oh...lol. Whenever I watch the series all the way through, I get so tired of Nat's rubber-banded sections, whatever you wanna call 'em. They pretty much kept her in those for nearly three seasons!

And then Jo and that ponytail. She already is the butt of so many lesbian jokes, and sticking with that ponytail for about four seasons sure didn't help any. I know that was her style and her look, but to keep it practically all the time.

Even Dorothy and Blanche, two old gal "Golden Girls", changed their hairstyles more than these young teenagers did, lol.

I think they must have been contractually obligated to keep one actress in a bowl cut. Once Molly was shipped out to Outer Mongolia, Tootie was given her haircut.

Yes, I agree the 'top knot' was a better look for Tootie.

Blair almost always had that cascading blonde waterfall, but there's actually an early episode ("Emily Dickinson") where her hair is... bizarre. The front is pulled down and across her forehead, covering her forehead, as if she was covering a big zit or something. I really can't figure out what was going on with her hair.

I like the natural look of Sue Ann's hairstyle in "Front Page". It's actually even more waterfall-y than Blair's hair. It looks great!

Yeah, they probably should have switched it out more. Even Cindy got to change her hairstyle more often than Nat or Jo during the Eastland years, and she was barely ever on after the first season!

I actually don't like Sue Ann with her long cascading her. For Sue Ann, I prefer her hair the way it is in "Like Mother, Like Daughter". I thought that looked fun and cute on her.

lol, in a way it's funny that they didn't cut Cindy's hair some for the series, because you just don't think of tomboys as having such long, luxurious manes of hair. But unlike Jo and seasons 2-4 Nat, yeah, it was nice getting to see hers be different; in braids, all loose, "barretted", and stuffed under a ball cap, lol.

The ponytail is cute, but the long cascading hair in "Front Page" is a much better look.

Yeah, they clearly did more with Cindy's hair than with Jo's... well, until the perm/mullet years. Good grief.

Oh, that style; yeah, for being a little older, that looks good on her. It's the in-between long style the way they fixed it in "Flash Flood", "Molly's Holiday", etc. that I don't care for.

I actually get sad when they changed their hairstyles. I will always think of them as Blair having her beautiful long blonde hair she had in season 2/3, Jo with her unique twist on the ponytail, Natalie with two short braids on either side of her head, and Tootie with the bowl cut.

Molly Ringwald states in her book, "Getting the Pretty Back", that she regrets her Dorothy Hamill bowl cut, which she got when she was ten (and which she wore on TFOL).

Oh I don't like the bowl cut on Tootie (though I have to accept it since there's not an interactive DVD option to digitally change her hairstyle, lol); I much prefer the "top knot" style she wore for half of season 3 ("Growing Pains", "Dear Me", etc.). I did love Blair's hair, but Jo and Natalie's hair style eventually bother me when I watch the series because they wore only those styles for three whole seasons; on those rare occasions when Jo has her hair down I have to enjoy while it's briefly there, and I don't think Natalie ever wore her hair differently (unless you count it hidden up inside her Charlie Chaplin hat).

And I wonder what one would call Natalie's hair? It's not braids, it's not ponytails...are they "long pigtails"?? Maybe "calf tails"? lol...who knows?

Oo, interesting RetroGuy...did Molly actually mention FOL anywhere in her book? I assume here you're just pointing out yourself that FOL was when she had her Dorothy Hamill cut.

I only did a digitized search of the book, which appeared to be partial, not full-text. There were no results for FOL, but she might have mentioned stuff in a part of the book that is not searchable. All I found in "Getting the Pretty Back" was tons and tons of fashion advice for when you're in a fancy French bistro in New York's Soho district, eating croissants with frommage with pâté while wearing a red dress and your best scarf with your ten best friends on a moonlit balcony overlooking the river, while a Jazz musician is playing Cafe Americain on the accordion, as etc, etc.

And yes, as you correctly surmise, I'm pointing out it's the cut she wore on the show. She didn't mention FOL, as far as I can tell. Pity! That would have been so much better than the endless frou-frou French/snooty NYC stuff.
