Adding this show to the list of my "self imposed" challenge to watch all the Bob Larbey efforts, brings me to 153 episodes watched, and I am still enjoying this project immensely. When you read about Bob Larbey, writers always mention that he is most famous for "The Good Life" and "As Time Goes By". Indeed those shows were very popular and enjoyed by adoring fans, including myself, to this day. (Both are again running on local PBS right now) But I must say, "Ever Decreasing Circles" is a very pleasant and funny show that could easily be considered Richard Briers' best effort ever, even if not the most well known.
Written by Esmonde and Larbey, starring Richard Briers (The Good Life), with a young fiery eyed Penelope Wilton (Cry Freedom, Downton Abbey), and Peter Egan (Big Breadwinner Hog, Prince Regent, Downton Abbey) and produced by Harold Snoad (Dad's Army, Are You Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances), it reads like a recipe for success. And if the goal was to make you laugh, it certainly is that! During the first few seconds of the show, I didn't think I was going to enjoy Briers' character at all, but 2 minutes in, I found myself giggling, then, chuckling, and out loud laughing many many times during the series. Briers' facial expressions, and awkward body language alone are often enough to bring laughter. And Peter Egan, as his nemesis, does a fantastic job of setting him up, reminiscent, but not as obvious, of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The show has scenes equal to some of the most classic comedy scenes in television history and, I think, deserves more mention and praise. I have thoroughly enjoyed this show but, put off watching the 90 minute finale for a week, as I didn't want it to end so soon. And now that I've seen it, I'm sure after some time has past, I'll watch every episode again! The show has been so totally enjoyable I have made clips of scenes to share with folks that would otherwise never watch a Britcom, and the result has been belly laughs! "Ever Decreasing Circles" is a great ambassador for British comedy! Highly recommended! Am downloading two future shows now but, may take a little break as I fear everything else is going to be a bit of a let down if watched immediately after "Ever Decreasing Circles". But, the project goes on. Laters! |
