Poor Bookman

Why was everyone (except Thelma) mean to Bookman, particularly Willona?
I noticed this with "The Rent Party" episode, and it continued through Season 6

Also, Penny started to calling Bookman fat jokes and she is a minor child calling an adult names making fun of him....

The only one who was not mean to him was Florida

In the earlier episodes, Bookman was more corrupt. In fact, he seemed downright slimy. In "The Family Business" episode, he wanted bribes (food, naturally) in exchange for not turning in the Evans' for starting a fix-it business. Then started bringing all his friends' broken items to be fixed for free. I think anyone would treat a guy like that poorly.

He obviously softened to a degree when the character became a regular which made the fat comments seem more mean spirited especially when he was kind of being nice and they would come out of the blue. I guess it made for good comedy though. The protagonist always has to have an antagonist.

Exactly. The Jeffersons allowed Bentley to live at their apt when his was given away and threw parties for him
