Default Friends who become a couple

Ever noticed how on certain shows, friends or even people that tolerate one another become boyfriend and girlfriend. How does this happen? How do you tolerate one another for seasons and then become a couple? Some EX.

Niles and Daphne on Frasier started out as friends before they became a couple.

Even though she was technically a genie and not human, Jeannie and Tony were friends before they got married.

Alex and Elaine were good friends who were intimate one night in Rome. I always like to think that sometime after the show was cancelled (with no final episode) that they got together for good.

The most obvious addition to this thread of them all - Ross and Rachel of "Friends".

Also: Chandler and Monica. Joey and Rachel were also in a brief relationship.

I read somewhere once that some people like to call that episode "Alex gets laid".

Well, Alex had a terrible time in Rome and Elaine said he wanted to make his trip memorable. My guess is that it was.

"Brief relationship?" Joey and Rachel?? I don't think so. What I mean to say is, it was never a real relationship because as far as I know, it was never consummated. (They never had sex).

Not to split hairs here, but it is a widely accepted fact that it is not necessary for two people to have sex in order for them to be engaged in a "relationship".

I think that happens most of the time with sitcoms that have romantic subplot. They first meet each other as colleagues or whatever, bond, become friends then fall in love. When you spend a lot of time with someone close you, you tend to develop feelings, and those feelings are played out and expressed in those shows.

For the fans, this is mostly good, depending on the characters and situations. It tends to make more sense for 2 characters we have known for a number of seasons to fall in love, rather than for one of the main characters to hook up with a guest character or someone, who is not a regular cast member.

There are plenty of couples who don't have sex, they can still be in a relationship... If someone follows Christian values they won't have premarital or extramarital sex, only with their spouse.

Granted. There are indeed people who are involved in legitimate monogamous relationships and do not have sex. . .however. . .we are talking about Joey and Rachel here. Joey (How YOU doin'?) Tribiano is a documented womanizer who always, always has sex with then women he has been involved with. Casual one nighters to relationships lasting months and months. Sex is what women where invented for according to the wolfish behavior of his character. Am I suppose to believe that after his 100's of conquests, he gets with Rachel and decides to be a eunuch? And Rachel is known for giving in to her carnal desires as well. Her sexual escapades are very well noted over the course of show. Indeed, she is the type that would wonder why after having sex with so many woman, Joey would not prompt her to drop her panties. She'd be all "What's the matter with ME? Don't you find me as sexually desirable as any one of your countless one-night-stands?" So you see, it just doesn't make sense that they were to be assumed to have had a "brief" relationship and never had sex with one another. What reason could either possibly give? They were BOTH wickedly promiscious.

Thank you! As someone who has vowed to never become sexually involved again unless I have a ring I am horrified when I read things like real relationships involve sex. I am always horrified when television shows have all these people jumping in and out of bed. This is one reason I never liked Friends, it showed offensive behavior.

Anyway, the reason many shows have friends/coworkers, etc becoming involved is because that happens often in real life. I know many people who ended up marrying people they were friends with for years before romance.

The biggest problem that arises from a couple waiting until after they are married to have sex is that they may be marrying someone with whom they are completely sexually incompatible with. He might want sex 2 times a day, everyday and she may draw the line at 2 times a week feeling that as much sex as that may be abusing her body. He may need her to perform a specific sex act in order to achieve orgasm...and she may see that same act as a direct sin against God and Man. Before the wedding vows is the time to find out these things....not after.
